I hear the real though far-off hymn That hails a new creation. Refrain: No storm can shake my inmost calm While to that rock I’m clinging. Since Love is Lord of heaven and earth, How can I keep from singing? 2 Through all the tumult and the strife, I hear that music ringing; It sounds and echoes in my soul; How can I keep from singing? [Refrain] 3 What though the tempest 'round me roar, I hear the truth it liveth. What though the darkness 'round me close, Songs in the night it giveth. [Refrain] 4 When tyrants tremble, sick with fear, And hear their death knells ringing; When friends rejoice both far and near, How can I keep from singing? [Refrain] 5 The peace of Christ makes fresh my heart, A fountain ever springing. All things are mine since I am his; How can I keep from singing? My Song Is Love Unknown

Author: Samuel Crossman (1624?-1683) Hymnal: Common Praise (1998) #184 (1998) Meter: 6.6.6.6.4.4.4.4 Scripture: Romans 5:1-11 Lyrics: 1 My song is love unknown, my Savior’s love to me, love to the loveless shown that they might lovely be. O who am I, that for my sake my Lord should take frail flesh, and die? 2 He came from his blest throne salvation to bestow, but all made strange, and none the longed-for Christ would know; but O my friend, my friend indeed, who at my need his life did spend. 3 Sometimes they strew his way, and his sweet praises sing, resounding all the day hosannas to their King. Then “Crucify!” is all their breath, and for his death they thirst and cry. 4 Why, what has my Lord done? What makes this rage and spite? He made the lame to run, he gave the blind their sight. Sweet injuries! Yet they at these themselves displease, and 'gainst him rise. 5 They rise, and needs will have my dear Lord made away; a murderer they save, the Prince of Life they slay. Yet cheerful he to suffering goes, that he his foes from thence might free. 6 Here might I stay and sing, no story so divine; never was love, dear King, never was grief like thine! This is my friend, in whose sweet praise I all my days could gladly spend. Topics: Holy Week (Good Friday) Languages: English Tune Title: LOVE UNKNOWN

Olearius, 1611-1684 Hymnal: Worship and Rejoice #155 (2003) Meter: 8.7.8.7.7.7.8.8 Scripture: Romans 5:5 First Line: "Comfort, comfort now my people Lyrics: 1 "Comfort, comfort now my people; tell of peace!" so says our God. Comfort those who sit in darkness mourning under sorrow's load. To God's people now proclaim that God's pardon waits for them! Tell them that their war is over; God will reign in peace forever! 2 For the herald's voice is crying in the desert far and near, calling us to true repentance since the Kingdom now is here. Oh, that warning cry obey! Now prepare for God a way! Let the valleys rise to meet him, and the hills bow down to greet him! 3 Straight shall be what long was crooked, and the rougher places plain! Let your hearts be true and humble, as befits his holy reign! For the glory of the Lord now on earth is shed abroad, and all flesh shall see the token that God's word is never broken.
