God is our refuge and defense In trouble our unfailing aid

Author: Montgomery Hymnal: The Voice of Praise #74 (1873) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Scripture: Psalm 113:5-7 Lyrics: 1 GOD is our refuge and defense, In trouble our unfailing aid; Secure in his omnipotence, What does can make our souls afraid? 2 There is a river, pure and bright, Whose streams make glad the heavenly plains; There, in eternity of light, The city of our God remains. 3 Not on a seraph's wing of fire-- But on the mightier wings of prayer, We reach that home of pure desire, And feel his cloudless presence there. 4 But soon, how soon! our spirits droop, Unwont the air of heaven to breathe; Yet God, in very deed, will stoop, And dwell himself with men beneath. 5 Come to thy living temples, then; As in the ancient times appear; Let earth be Paradise again, And man, O God, thine image here! Psalm 113

Author: Isaac Watts Hymnal: Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts, The #Ps.248 (1806) Meter: 8.8.8.8.8.8 Scripture: Psalm 113 First Line: Ye that delight to serve the Lord Lyrics: Ye that delight to serve the Lord, The honors of his name record, His sacred name for ever bless; Where'er the circling sun displays His rising beams, or setting rays, Let lands and seas his power confess. Not time, nor nature's narrow rounds, Can give his vast dominion bounds, The heav'ns are far below his height: Let no created greatness dare With our eternal God compare, Armed with his uncreated might. He bows his glorious head to view What the bright hosts of angels do, And bends his care to mortal things; His sovereign hand exalts the poor, He takes the needy from the door, And makes them company for kings. When childless families despair, He sends the blessing of an heir, To rescue their expiring name; The mother, with a thankful voice, Proclaims his praises and her joys: Let every age advance his fame. Ye Saints and Servants of the Lord

Hymnal: A New Version of the Psalms of David #CXIII (1760) Scripture: Psalm 113 Lyrics: 1 Ye Saints and Servants of the Lord, The triumphs of his Name record; 2 His sacred Name for ever bless. 3 Where-e'er the circling Sun displays His rising Beams or setting Rays, Due Praise to his great Name address. 4 God thro' the World extends his Sway: The Regions of eternal Day But Shadows of his Glory are. 5 To Him, whose Majesty excels, Who made the Heav'n wherein He dwells, Let no created Pow'r compare. 6 Though 'tis beneath his State to view In highest Heav'n what Angels do, Yet He to Earth vouchsafes his Care: He takes the Needy from his Cell, Advancing him in Courts to dwell, Companion to the Greatest there. 7 When childless Families despair, He sends the Blessings of an Heir, To rescue their expiring Name: Makes her that barren was, to bear, And joyfully her Fruit to rear.
