Ithamar Conkey

1815 - 1867 Hymnal Number: 50 Composer of "[In the cross of Christ I glory]" in Songs of His Coming Ithamar D. Conkey USA 1815-1867. Born of Scottish ancestry in Shutesbury, MA, he became a wool merchant. He married Elizabeth Billings, and they had a daughter and two sons. He was organist at Central Baptist Church,Norwich, CN. After that, he went to NewYork City and served as bass soloist at Calvary Episcopal church and Grace Church. Later, he served as bass soloist and choir director of Madison Avenue Baptist Church. His famous hymn was written in 1849. Two years later, William Howard Doane was baptized in the same church. John Perry

Born in Jefferson County,IL, he attended Illinois Agricultural College and Boston University. He married Elzire (Elsie) Louise Wiley in 1880, and they had an adopted son, Merritte. He was ordained a Methodist Episcopal minister and served, beginning in Prairie, IL in 1880, and at a number of churches in Chicago and other cities. He pastored the People's Church, Chicago, IL, 1902-07. He was a member of the American & Asiatic Archaelogical Society. He traveled extensively in Europe. He was a lecturer, orator, and writer. He wrote several books, including fiction, history, travel, and a number of hymn lyrics and a few tunes. He co-edited “Songs of the soul” (1885). John Perry

Born in Cazenovia, NY, she lived in Manlius, NY, until 1898, then moved to Washington, D.C., but maintained a summer residence at Thousand Island Park, NY. R. E. Winsett

1876 - 1952 Hymnal Number: 127 Composer of "[Oh, I'm looking for my Saviour]" in Songs of His Coming Robert Emmett Winsett (January 15, 1876 — June 26, 1952 (aged 76) was an American composer and publisher of Gospel music. Winsett was born in Bledsoe County, Tennessee, and graduated from the Bowman Normal School of Music in 1899. He founded his own publishing company in 1903, and his first publication, Winsett's Favorite Songs, quickly became popular among the Baptist and Pentecostal churches of the American South. Pentecostal Power followed in 1907; that year Winsett completed postgraduate work at a conservatory. He married Birdie Harris in 1908, and had three sons and two daughters with her. He settled in Fort Smith, Arkansas, continuing to compose gospel songs, of which he would write over 1,000 in total. He became a minister in 1923, and was affiliated with the Church of God (Seventh Day). Birdie Harris died late in the 1920s, and shortly thereafter Winsett moved back to Tennessee. He founded a new company in Chattanooga, and published more shape note music books. He remarried, to Mary Ruth Edmonton, in 1930, and had three further children. Winsett's final publication, Best of All (1951), sold over 1 million copies, and in total his books sold over ten million copies. His song "Jesus Is Coming Soon" won a Dove Award for Gospel Song of the Year at the 1969 awards. He has been inducted into the Southern Gospel Museum and Hall of Fame. --www.wikipedia.org

William G. Tomer

1833 - 1896 Person Name: W. G. Tomer Hymnal Number: 165 Composer of "[God be with you till we meet again]" in Songs of His Coming Born: October 5, 1833, New Jersey. Died: September 26, 1896, New Jersey. Buried: Union Cemetery, Finesville, New Jersey. Tomer studied singing and sang in the choir in Finesville, New Jersey, and began teaching school at age 17. He served in the Union army during the American civil war, then worked as a clerk in Washington, DC, served as music director for Grace Methodist Episcopal Church, and taught school in New Carpentersville and Greenwich, New Jersey. Lizzie De Armond

1847 - 1936 Hymnal Number: 59 Author of "What Jesus is to You" in Songs of His Coming Lizzie De Armond was a prolific writer of children's hymns, recitations and exercises. When she was twelve years old her first poem was published in the Germantown, Pa. Telegraph, however, it was not until she was a widow with eight children to support that she started writing in earnest. She wrote articles, librettos, nature stories and other works, as well as hymns. 1864 - 1914 Hymnal Number: 103 Author of "Trust in Me" in Songs of His Coming Rv William Clark Martin USA 1864-1914. Born at Hightstown, NJ, he graduated from the Peddie Institute in Hightstown in 1884, and in 1891 from the Crozer Theological Seminary, Upland, PA. He became minister of the Grace Baptist Church, Camden, NJ,(1891-1894); Noank Baptist Church, Noank, CT (1894-1900); Tabernacle Baptist Church, New Albany, IN (1902-1904); First Baptist Church, Seymour, IN (1902-1904); First Baptist Church, Bluffton, IN (1904-1909); Grace Baptist Church, Somerville, MA (1909-1912); and First Baptist Church, Fort Myers, FL (1912-1914). In 1891 he married Euretta (Etta) May Wilcox, and they had at least three children (no names found). He penned many hymn lyrics. He died of heart failure at his farm in Rialto, FL. John Perry

1879 - 1939 Person Name: H. B. Hymnal Number: 121 Author of "I'm Going Through" in Songs of His Coming Herbert Buffum was born in La Fayette, Illinois 13 November 1879. He became a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He started preaching at seventeen years of age. He did city mission work up and down the Pacific Coast and later in small towns in Kansas. He began publishing hymns at the age of eighteen. John J. Husband

1760 - 1825 Person Name: J. J. Husband Hymnal Number: 169 Composer of "[We praise Thee, O God!]" in Songs of His Coming Rv John Jenkins Husband United Kingdom 1760-1825. Born in Plymouth, England, he worked as a clerk at Surrey Chapel. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1809 and taught music in Philadelphia, PA. It is surmised that he married Anna Elizabeth Kirkhum, but no other family information was found. An author and composer, he also worked as a clerk at St. Paul’s Protestant Episcopal Church. In 1807 he published “A collection of hymns & Psalms for the use of singing school & musical societies”. He died in Philadelphia, PA. John Perry

Herbert H. Booth

1862 - 1926 Person Name: Herbert Booth Hymnal Number: 79 Author of "Cleansing for Me" in Songs of His Coming Herbert Henry Howard Booth (26 August 1862 – 25 September 1926) was the third son of William and Catherine Booth.
