Martha A. W. Cook

1806 - 1874 Person Name: Mrs. M. A. W. Cook Hymnal Number: 189 Author of "The Lord will Provide" in The Bow of Promise Martha Elizabeth Duncan Walker Cook USA 1806-1874. Born in Northcumberland County, PA, she married Rev. Parsons Cook, editor of a Boston paper called “The Puritan Recorder”. She contributed to, and for a time, was editor of the “Continental Monthly”. She translated “The life of Chopin”, by Franz Liszt, from the French in 1863. She also translated “Undivine comedy” by Zygmund Krasinski in 1875. She died in Hoboken, NJ. John Perry

J. Howard Entwisle

Born in PA, he became a musician and songbook editor-compiler in Philadelphia, PA, in the 1890s. He collaberated with William J Kirkpatrick, also of Philadelphia, promoting gospel songs. He helped compile “Songs of love and praise #4”, then later “Songs of love and praise #5”. Other published works were: “Bright melodies” (1899), “Heavenly sunlight” (1900), “Exalted praise” (1901). Died: February 16, 1886, at his home in Middletown, Connecticut. Buried: Indian Hill Cemetery, Middletown, Connecticut. Harrington graduated from Wesleyan University in 1852. From 1852 to 1855, he taught Latin at the New Hampshire Conference Seminary, Sanbornton Bridge, New Hampshire; from 1855 to 1860, he served as president of the seminary. Hymnal Number: 9 Author of "In that City" in The Bow of Promise Charles J Butler USA 1860- Butler, a Methodist, speaks of a voyage he took from his home, Camden, NJ, as a bachelor, to Britain around 1894, stating he roamed around the British Isles for 14 months through Scotland, Ireland, Britain, and Paris, dealing with ship stewards, street urchins, and visiting famous sights. He wrote about his trip in 1901. He later resided in Philadephia and was a salesman and musician. He wrote “Heart Melodies #3” with Charles Bentley (1897). He is possibly the listed secretary of the YMCA in Philadelphia in 1920. John Perry

Geo. D. Elderkin

1845 - 1928 Hymnal Number: 100 Composer of "[The Lord's our Rock, in Him we hide]" in The Bow of Promise Almost nothing is known about George D. Elderkin (b. 1845; d. 1928). There was a George D. Elderkin Publishing Company in Chicago which published four collections of gospel hymns entitled The Finest of the Wheat. Book Three (1904) includes 259 songs, including music by both George D. and George W. Elderkin, “for prayer and evangelistic meetings, church and missionary services, Sunday schools and young people’s societies,” and was edited by Geo. D. Elderkin, C. C. McCabe, Wm. J. Kirkpatrick, H. L. Gilmour, G. W. Elderikn, and F. A. Hardon.” It was hardbound, and sold for 30 cents per copy, postpaid. Emily Brink
