O Christ Who by a Cross

Author: Shirley Erena Murray, 1931- Meter: 10.10.10.10 Appears in 3 hymnals Scripture: 1 Corinthians 1:18 First Line: O Christ who by a cross made peace your sign Lyrics: 1 O Christ who by a cross made peace your sign, who gives your peace in water, bread and wine: O Spirit Christ who is our spirit's home, teach us the secret of the true shalom. 2 We speak of peace when in our hearts we war and, unforgiving, keep our grudges sore, we promise peace while yet we strive to win, and in our enemy, see not our kin. 3 Two deaths now face the starving and the fed– the blinding bomb, the simple lack of bread; with riches of the earth at our command, from weaponry to welcome, turn our hand. 4 The selfishness which is our human curse, the arsenal of hatred which we nurse— all are dispelled when in our hearts we say "There is no way to peace: peace is the way." Topics: Communion; Interpersonal Conflict; Courage; Cross; Forgiveness; Humanity; Jesus Christ's Passion; Peace of Jesus Christ; Pursuit of Peace; Reconciliation; Shalom Used With Tune: SURSUM CORDA

Come, Celebrate the Call of God

Author: Brian Wren Meter: 8.6.8.6 D Appears in 3 hymnals Scripture: 1 Corinthians 1:18-31 Lyrics: 1 Come, celebrate the call of God that wakens and renews, and chooses from us, for our good, the bringers of good news. The Spirit's blessing all ordains to show what God has done, yet brings to focus and contains the many in the one. 2 A chosen one today replies, and fit and ready stands. *Her calling now we recognize with prayer and loving hands. A servant leader, truthful friend, we gladly will receive, to stir and comfort, shake and mend, be glad with us, and grieve. 3 Great Spirit, give *her word and breath in Christ to live and speak, and shield against the pow'rs of death the outcast and the weak, *her flag of faith, above defeats, in heaven's breeze unfurled, as all her deepest gladness meets the hunger of the world. *for her, read him when appropriate Topics: Ordination and Installation; Installation; Ministry; Ordination Used With Tune: ALIDA'S TUNE

Together

Author: Joyce B. Meyers; Harlan D. Sorrell Meter: 7.7.11.7.7.12 with refrain Appears in 2 hymnals Scripture: 1 Corinthians 1:10 First Line: Long ago the prophets told Refrain First Line: Together, together Lyrics: 1 Long ago the prophets told Of the time we now behold, When the glorious church or city of our God Would upon a mountain stand, As a light to all the land, And to it the nations all would flow together. Refrain: Together, together, We were raised up together from the miry clay of sin, And we dwell now together, every heart to heart akin; We in heav’nly places sit, For we’re framed and joined and knit, In the love of Christ our Savior together. 2 From the loathsome plains of sin, Where our suff’ring souls had been Held in bondage under Satan’s tyrant sway, To the mount of holiness, High above unrighteousness, Jesus’ love has gathered all of us together. [Refrain] 3 We’re the temple of the Lord, Built together on His word, And our Father in His temple ever dwells; We will walk together here, In His love and godly fear, And our voices shall exalt His name together. [Refrain] 4 In this temple of our God We’re admitted through the blood Which the Savior shed to cleanse and make us whole, Then we’re “lively stones” indeed, Conqu’rors through the holy seed, And are pillars in the church of God forever. [Refrain] 5 Of the church of God alone Jesus is the “Corner stone,” And the standard is the plumbline of His word; With His Spirit as our guide Who has come with us to ’bide— Sanctified, the light, the truth we see together. [Refrain] 6 There are many souls in sin, Jesus seeks to bring them in; Let us work together with the Lord today: Then when all the work is done, And He comes to claim His own, We’ll be caught up in the clouds with Him together. [Refrain] Topics: Fellowship Used With Tune: [Long ago the prophets told] Text Sources: Timeless Truths (http://library.timelesstruths.org/music/Together); The Gospel Trumpet Company, Songs of Grace and Glory, 1918 (116); Harlan D. Let Us Be United

Author: Charles W. Naylor Meter: 9.9.9.9.13.7.13.11 Appears in 2 hymnals Scripture: 1 Corinthians 1:10 First Line: Should not the children of one Father Refrain First Line: He hath broken down the middle wall of partition Lyrics: 1 Should not the children of one Father Live together here in harmony?— Bound by His love unto each other, So that they ne’er can divided be. Refrain: He hath broken down the middle wall of partition, And in Him hath made us one; He hath saved us from the sin of strife and division, Through the precious cleansing blood of His dear Son. 2 Hear Jesus praying for His people: “Sanctify them that they may be one”; Oh, let His prayer in us be answered, And all His will in our hearts be done. [Refrain] 3 Sects and divisions shame our Savior, Cause the world to scoff and disbelieve, Send many precious souls to ruin, Who might the grace of the Lord receive. [Refrain] 4 Let all contentions, names, and parties Be forsaken for the truth alone; Let all the ransomed be united, And no division among them known. [Refrain] Used With Tune: [Should not the children of one Father] Text Sources: Timeless Truths (http://library.timelesstruths.org/music/Let_Us_Be_United); The Gospel Trumpet Company, Truth in Song, 1907 (130); Harlan D. As Royal Banners Are Unfurled

Author: Venantius Fortunatus (540?-600?); Alan Gaunt (1935-) Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 2 hymnals Scripture: 1 Corinthians 1:18-31 Lyrics: 1 As royal banners are unfurled, the cross displays its mystery: the Maker of our flesh, in flesh, impaled and hanging helplessly. 2 Already deeply wounded: see his side now riven by a spear, and all our sins are swept away by blood and water flowing here. 3 See everything the prophets wrote fulfilled in its totality, and tell the nations of the world our God is reigning from the tree. 4 This tree, ablaze with royal light and with the blood-red robe it wears, is hallowed and embellished by the weight of holiness it bears. 5 Stretched like a balance here, his arms have gauged the price of wickedness; but, hanging here, his love outweighs hell's unforgiving bitterness. 6 The Saviour, victim, sacrifice is, through his dying glorified; his life is overcome by death and leaps up, sweeping death aside. 7 We hail the cross, faith's one true hope: God's passion set in time and space, by which our guilt is blotted out, engulfed in such stupendous grace. Amen. Topics: Holy Week (Good Friday) Used With Tune: GONFALON ROYAL
