Praise God, for he is kind

Meter: 6.6.6.6.8.8 Appears in 18 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Praise God, for he is kind: his mercy lasts for aye. 2 Give thanks with heart and mind to God of gods alway: for certainly his mercies dure most firm and sure eternally. 3 The Lord of lords praise ye, Whose mercies even stand. 4 Great wonders only he doth work with mighty hand: for certainly his mercies dure most firm and sure eternally. 5 Give praise to his great name, who, by his wisdom high, the heaven above did frame, and buiot the lofty sky: for certainly his mercies dure most firm and sure eternally. 6 To him who did outstretch the earth so great and wide; above the waters’ reach who made it to abide: for certainly his mercies dure most firm and sure eternally. 7 Great lights who made of old; for his grace lasteth aye: 8 the sun, which we behold, to rule the lightsome day: for certainly his mercies dure most firm and sure eternally. 9 Also the moon so clear, which shineth in our sight; the stars that do appear, to rule the darksome night: for certainly his mercies dure most firm and sure eternally. 10 Who smote Egyptian foes, that did his message scorn; and in his anger rose, and slew all their first-born: for certainly his mercies dure most firm and sure eternally. 11 Thence Israel out he brought; his mercies ever stand: 12 with outstretched arm he wrought, and with a mighty hand: for certainly his mercies dure most firm and sure eternally. 13 The sea he clave in twain; for his grace lasteth still: 14 and through the parted main led his own Israel: for certainly his mercies dure most firm and sure eternally. 15 But cast down Pharaoh then beneath the Red Sea's wave, and all his mighty men unto destruction gave: for certainly his mercies dure most firm and sure eternally. 16 Who, in his faithfulness, his chosen people led through the great wilderness, and in his love them fed: for certainly his mercies dure most firm and sure eternally. 17 To him great kings who smote; for his grace hath no bound. 18 who slew, and spared not kings famous and renowned: for certainly his mercies dure most firm and sure eternally. 19 Sihon the Am’rites’ prince; for his grace lasteth aye: 20 and mighty Og, who once in Bashan's land had sway: for certainly his mercies dure most firm and sure eternally. 21 By lot he gave their land, for his grace faileth never, 22 into his Israel's hand, an heritage for ever: for certainly his mercies dure most firm and sure eternally. 23 Who also on us thought when in our low estate; 24 and from the hand us brought of those who did us hate: for certainly his mercies dure most firm and sure eternally. 25 Who to all flesh gives food; for his grace faileth never. 26 Give thanks to God most good, the God of heaven, for ever: for certainly his mercies dure most firm and sure eternally. For this fair land, For this bright day, Our thanks we pay-- Gifts of Thy hand. 3 May every mountain height, Each vale and forest green, Shine in Thy word's pure light, And its rich fruits be seen! May every tongue Be tuned to praise, And join to raise A grateful song. 4 Earth! hear thy Maker's voice, The great Redeemer own, Believe, obey, rejoice, And worship Him alone; Cast down thy pride, Thy sin deplore, And bow before The Crucified. 5 And when in power He comes, O may our native land, From all its rending tombs, Send forth a glorious band, A countless throng Ever to sing To heaven's high King Salvation's song. Rejoice, ye sons of men!

Author: W. W. How Meter: 6.6.6.6.8.8 Appears in 5 hymnals Lyrics: 1 Rejoice ye sons of men! Your brightest praises yield! The everlasting Son See in the flesh revealed! The world's Redeemer comes to-day His own Redemption's price to pay. 2 Lo! Simeon's saintly arms The holy burden bear; He sees with raptured eye His true salvation there. The weary waiting now is past; The long-expected comes at last. 3 The agèd saint's embrace The blessèd mother saw, And on his words so strange She mused with silent awe. What conflict for her child is stored? And what for her this piercing sword? 4 O Saviour, in Thy courts We all our sins confess: But Thou didst once for us Fulfill all righteousness. Impure, unclean, oh, may we be, Presented pure and clean in Thee! 5 And when, O God made Man, Upon our waiting eye, In glorious might revealed, Salvation draweth nigh; In that great day Thy servants bless, And be "the Lord of Righteousness"! Amen. Topics: Other Feasts and Fasts The Purification Used With Tune: BEVAN

The lofty heavens proclaim

Meter: 6.6.6.6.8.8 Appears in 1 hymnal Lyrics: 1 The lofty heavens proclaim the majesty of God; the firmament displays his handiwork abroad: day unto day doth utter speech, and night to night doth knowledge teach. 2 Aloud they do not speak, they utter forth no word, nor into language break; yet is their witness heard: their line through all the earth extends, their words to earth's remotest ends. 3 In them he hath prepared a dwelling for the sun; which, as a mighty man, exults his race to run; and, bridegroom-like in his array, comes from his chamber, bringing day. 4 His daily going forth is from the end of heaven; the firmament to him is for his circuit given. He to its end returns again; hid from his heat can nought remain. 5 The Lord's law is complete; it makes the soul arise: the Lord's decree is sure; it makes the simple wise: the statutes of the Lord are right imparting to the heart delight. 6 The Lord's command is pure; light on the eyes it pours: the Lord's fear is unstained, for ever it endures: the judgments of the Lord are true, and altogether righteous, too. 7 More to be prized than gold, yea, much fine gold, they are, than honey from the comb that droppeth, sweeter far. They also warn thy servant, Lord; in keeping them is great reward. 8 Who can his errors know? From secret faults me cleanse: keep thou thy servant back from all presumptuous sins let them not triumph over me; then shall I pure and upright be. 9 Yea, then I shall be free from much and heinous sin. O let the words I speak, and all my thoughts within, be acceptable, Lord, to thee, who strength and Saviour art to me. Scripture: Psalm 19 Used With Tune: BEVAN

Thou art the Christ, O Lord

Author: W. W. How Meter: 6.6.6.6.8.8 Appears in 21 hymnals Lyrics: 1 "Thou art the Christ, O Lord, The Son of God, most high!" Forever be adored, That Name in earth and sky. In which, tho' mortal strength may fail, The saints of God at last prevail! 2 Oh, surely he was blest, With blessedness unpriced, Who taught of God, confessed The Godhead in the Christ! For of Thy Church, Lord, Thou didst own Thy saint a true foundation-stone. 3 Thrice fallen, thrice restored! The bitter lesson learnt, That heart for Thee, O Lord, With triple ardor burnt. The cross he took he laid not down Until he grasped the martyr's crown. 4 Oh bright triumphant faith! Oh courage void of fears! Oh love, most strong in death! Oh penitential tears! By these, Lord, keep us lest we fall, And make us go where Thou shalt call. Amen. Topics: Other Feasts and Fasts St. Peter; Confession of Christ Used With Tune: BEVAN

Supported by the Word

Author: John Newton Meter: 6.6.6.6.6.8 Appears in 8 hymnals Lyrics: 1. Supported by the Word, Though in himself a worm, The servant of the Lord Can wondrous acts perform: Without dismay he boldly treads Where’er the path of duty leads. 2. The haughty king in vain, With fury on his brow, Believers would constrain To golden gods to bow: The furnace could not make them fear, Because they knew the Lord was near. 3. As vain was the decree Which charged them not to pray; Daniel still bowed his knee, And worshiped thrice a day: Trusting in God, he feared not men, Though threatened with the lion’s den. 4. Secure they might refuse Compliance with such laws, For what had they to lose, When God espoused their cause? He made the hungry lions crouch, Nor durst the fire His children touch. 5. The Lord is still the same, A mighty shield and tow’r, And they who trust His name Are guarded by His pow’r: He can the rage of lions tame, And bear them harmless through the flame. 6. Yet we too often shrink When trials are in view; Expecting we must sink, And never can get through. But could we once believe indeed, From all these fears we should be freed.
