? - 1782 Composer of "APPLEBY" in The Church Missionary Hymn Book Norman, John, was a student at the Baptist College, Bristol, and entered the Baptist ministry, as assistant to D. Turner, in 1777. He was afterwards, for a short time, assistant to the Rev. P. Gibbs, of Plymouth, in which town he died in the spring of 1782. In Rippon's Baptist Selection 1787, appeared a hymn on Holy Baptism, "Thus it became the Prince of grace," in 4 stanzas of 6 lines, and signed "Norman." It is still in use in its full or in an abbreviated form. [Rev. W. R. Stevenson, M.A.]
