Harry Dixon Loes

1895 - 1965 Hymnal Number: 12 Composer of "[I don't have to wait until I'm grown up]" in Junior Choir Pseudonyms: Deal Bartells Born Harold Loes, the American gospel song writer took the middle name Dixon in honour of A. C. Dixon, the pastor of Moody Church at the time. Harry Dixon Loes studied at Moody Bible Institute, and after extensive training in music he served a number of churches with a ministry of music. From 1939 until his retirement he was a member of the music faculty of Moody Bible Institute. He wrote the lyrics for 1,500 gospel songs, and composed 3,000 tunes. One day in 1915, Paul Rader preached a sermon in Moody Church, in Chicago. His theme was, “All that I want is in Jesus.” In the congregation was young Harry Dixon Loes, then a senior at Moody Bible Institute, where he would eventually teach. Inspired by Dr. Rader’s message, Harry Loes wrote the words and music for a song he called "All Things in Jesus." It was first sung by the church’s youth group. Friends all around me are trying to find What the heart yearns for, by sin undermined; I have the secret, I know where ’tis found: Only true pleasures in Jesus abound. All that I want is in Jesus. After serving several churches as music director and later being active for more than twelve years in evangelist work, he joined the music faculty of Moody Bible Institute, in 1939, where he remained as a popular music teacher until his death in 1965. Mr. Loes was the writer of numerous gospel songs and choruses. One day, while listening to a sermon on the subject of Christ's atonement entitled “Blessed Redeemer,” Mr. Loes was inspired to compose this tune. He then sent the melody with the suggested title to Mrs. Christiansen, a friend for many years, asking her to write the text. P. P. Bliss

1838 - 1876 Person Name: P. P. B. Hymnal Number: 9 Author of "Only an Armour-Bearer" in Junior Choir Philip P. Bliss (b. Clearfield County, PA, 1838; d. Ashtabula, OH, 1876) left home as a young boy to make a living by working on farms and in lumber camps, all while trying to continue his schooling. He was converted at a revival meeting at age twelve. Bliss became an itinerant music teacher, making house calls on horseback during the winter, and during the summer attending the Normal Academy of Music in Genesco, New York. His first song was published in 1864, and in 1868 Dwight L. Moody advised him to become a singing evangelist. For the last two years of his life Bliss traveled with Major D. W. Whittle and led the music at revival meetings in the Midwest and Southern United States. Bliss and Ira D. Sankey published a popular series of hymn collections entitled Gospel Hymns. The first book of the series, Gospel Songs, was published in 1874. Bliss's tragic death at the age of thirty-eight happened near the end of 1876. Philip P. Bliss and his wife were traveling to Chicago to sing for the evangelistic services led by Daniel W. Whittle at Dwight L. Moody's Tabernacle. But a train wreck and fire en route claimed their lives. Bert Polman ================= Bliss, Philip, b. at Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, July 9, 1838. In 1864 he went to Chicago in the employ of Dr. George F. Root, the musician, where he was engaged in conducting musical Institutes, and in composing Sunday School melodies. Originally a Methodist, he became, about 1871, a choirman of the First Congregational Church, Chicago, and the Superintendent of its Sunday Schools. In 1874 he joined D. W. Whittle in evangelical work. To this cause he gave (although a poor man) the royalty of his Gospel Songs, which was worth some thirty thousand dollars. His death was sudden. It occurred in the railway disaster at Ashtabula, Ohio, Dec. 30, 1876. ... Some of his verses have obtained wide popularity in most English-speaking countries. The more widely known, and specially those which are found in collections in use in G. Britain, are in the following American works:— i. The Prize, 1870. 1. I should like to die. Death anticipated. This is one of his earliest compositions, and is unworthy of the position it holds. 2. Through the valley of the shadow I must go. Death anticipated. 3. Whosoever heareth, shout, shout the sound. Jesus the Way. Written during the winter of 1869-70 after hearing Mr. H. Moorhouse (from England) preach on St. John iii. 16. ii. The Charm, 1871. 4. Almost persuaded now to believe. Procrastination. This was suggested by the following passage in a sermon by the Rev. Mr. Brundnge, Bliss being present at its delivery:—" He who is almost persuaded is almost saved, but to be almost saved is to be entirely lost." 5. Ho! my comrades! see the signal. Faithfulness. 6. O! Jerusalem, the golden city, bright, &c. Heaven. 7. On what Foundation do [did] you build? Christ the Foundation. iii. The Song Tree, 1872. 8. Light in the darkness, sailor, day is at hand. Safety. This hymn, “The Life-Boat," has attained to great popularity. The incident upon which it is based, that of the rescue of a ship's crew by a life-boat, is given in detail by Mr. Sankey in his Sacred Songs, &c, No. 99 (large ed.). It is sometimes known by its refrain, "Pull for the shore," &c. iv. The Joy, 1873. 9. In me ye may have peace. Peace. 10. To die is gain. Death anticipated. v. Sunshine, 1873. 11. This hymn arose out of the following circumstances :—" A vast fortune was left in the hands of a minister for one of his poor parishioners. Fearing that it might be sqmandered if suddenly bestowed upon him, the wise minister sent him a little at a time, with a note saying, “This is thine; use it wisely; there is more to follow.” Hence also the refrain ‘More to follow,’ by which the hymn is known." 21. The incident out of which this hymn arose is thus stated in The Christian, No. 365, "At the Industrial Exposition at Chicago it was an everyday appointment to meet at the Central Fountain. Mr. P. P. Two hymns," I am so glad that our Father in heaven," and " Sowing the seed by the daylight [dawnlight] fair," (sometimes given as " Sowing our seed in the morning fair ") are usually attributed to Mr. Bliss. In his Gospel Songs, Cincinnati, 1874, however, he lays claim to the music only. Mr. Sankey attributes this last to "E. A. Oakey." With the exception of No. 48, these hymns are given in Mr. Sankey's Sacred Songs & Solos, Pts. i. and ii. Their popularity is far beyond their literary merits, and is mainly due to the simple melodies to which they are wedded. As a writer of hymns of this class Mr. Bliss is second only to Mrs. Van Alstyne. Many anecdotes concerning hymns of this class are given in American Evangelists; an Account of their work in England and America, by the Rev. Elias Nason, Boston, U.S., Lathrop & Co., 1877. Mr. Bliss is usually known as "P. P. Bliss." This is found on the title-pages of his collections. On his own authority, however, we are enabled to say that his name originally stood thus : “Philipp Bliss.” Early in life he separated the final p from his Christian name, constituted it a capital P, and thus produced "P. William M. Runyan

1870 - 1957 Hymnal Number: 11 Author of "Assurance March" in Junior Choir Showing early musical promise, William Marion Runyan (b. Marion, NY, 1870; d. Pittsburg, KS, 1957) was a substitute church organist by the age of twelve. He became a Methodist minister in 1891 and served several churches in Kansas but turned to evangelism in 1903; he worked for the Central Methodist Conference for the next twenty years. Following that service, Runyan became pastor at the Federated Church at John Brown University, Sulphur Springs, Arkansas. Editor of Christian Workers Magazine, he also served the Moody Bible Institute and was an editor for Hope Publishing Company until his retirement in 1948. Runyan wrote a number of hymn texts, gospel songs, and hymn tunes. Bert Polman

Gottfried W. Fink

1783 - 1846 Hymnal Number: 8 Composer of "[Thy Word is like a garden, Lord]" in Junior Choir Rv Gottfried Wilhelm Fink PhD Germany 1783-1846. Born at Sulza, Thuringa, Germany, he was a German composer, music theorist, poet, and a protestant clergyman. From 1804-1808 he studied at the University of Leipzig, where he joined the Corps Lusatia, where he made his first attempts at composition and poetry. In 1811 he was appointed Vicar in Leipzig for some years, where he also founded an educational institution, leading it until 1829. Around 1800 he worked for the “Allgemeine musikalische Zeitschrift” (General musical mazazine). In 1827 he became the magazine's editor-in-chief for 15 years. From 1838 he was a lecturer at the University of Leipzig. In 1841 he became a Privatdozent of musicology at the university. That year he became a member of the Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin, and a year later was appointed university Music Director. He was highly esteemed throughout his life as a music theorist and composer, receiving numberous honors and awards, both at home and abroad. The Faculty of Philosophy at Leipzig University awarded him an honorary doctorate. He wrote mostly Songs and ballads and collected songs as well. He authored important words on music theory and history, but was best known as editor of the “Musikalischer Hausschatz der Deutschen”, a collection of about 1000 songs and chants, as well as the “Deutsche Liedertafel” (German song board), a collection of polyphonic songs sung by men. Edwin Hodder

1837 - 1904 Hymnal Number: 8 Author of "Thy Word Is Like a Garden, Lord" in Junior Choir Hodder, Edwin, published in 1863 The New Sunday School Hymn Book, and in 1868 a New and Enlarged edition of the same. To this collection he contributed 27 hymns, each of which is headed with his name. Of these nearly one half have passed into other hymnals for children, including Major; the Baptist Sunday School Hymn Book, 1880 ; the Sunday School Union Voice of Praise, 1886, and others. Born in 1838. --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology, Appendix, Part II (1907) ======================= Hodder, Edwin, p. 1571, i., was b. Dec. 13, 1837, at Staines, Middlesex, and went to New Zealand in 1856. After his return he joined the English Civil Service in 1861, retiring in 1897, and finally resided at Henfield, Sussex. He d. March 1, 1904. He was the author of many works, biographical, devotional and other, the earliest being Memories of New Zealand Life, 1862, and the latest The Life of a Century, 1900. His hymns appeared in his New Sunday School Hymn Book, 1863, and 2nd ed. 1863, including:— 1. Father, give us now Thy blessing. Close of School. 2. Lord, we bring our work to Thee. Christian Service. 3. The night was wild, and stormy winds. It is I. 4. The Saviour loves all children. Jesus the Children's Friend. 5. Thy Word is like a garden, Lord. Holy Scripture. James Chadwick

1813 - 1882 Person Name: Bishop Chadwick Hymnal Number: 14 Author of "Gloria in Excelsis Deo" in Junior Choir Chadwick, James, was born April 24, 1813, at Drogheda, Ireland, and educated at Ushaw College, Durham, where he was ordained in 1836, and successively became Professor and President. In 1866 he was consecrated H. C. Bishop of Newcastle, and died May 14, 1882. Two hymns which he contributed to the Holy Family Hymns, 1860, are in most later Roman Catholic hymnals:— 1. Hail, holy mission, hail. For a Mission. 2. Jesus, my God [Lord], behold at length the time. W. H. Neidlinger

1863 - 1924 Hymnal Number: 15 Composer of "[In the little village of Bethlehem]" in Junior Choir William Harold Neidlinger USA 1863-1924. Born at New York, NY, he studied with organists Dudley Buck and C C Muller (1880-90) in New York. He played the organ at St Michael’s Church in New York City. He also conducted the Amphion Male Chorus and the Cecilia Women’s Chorus in Brooklyn, and the Treble Clef Club and Mannheim Glee Club in Philadelphia, PA. He taught in the music department of the Brooklyn Institute of Arts & Sciences. He went on to study with E Dannreuther in London (1896-98) then worked in Paris as a singing teacher until 1901. In 1897 he married Alice Adelaide Maxwell Sypher, and they had a son, Harold. Returning to American in 1901, he settled in Chicago, IL, where for several years he was one of the prominent singing teachers. He wrote music for a religious mass, He published a comic opera, Ulysses” in 1898, another opera, “Sweet Anne Page” (1903), a cantata, “Prayer, praise, and promise”. two song books, “Songs of the campfire girls of America”, and “Small songs for small singers” (1896), a standard work for kindergartens, that was so successful that he.became interested in child psychology and nearly abandoned music. He even established a school for handicapped children in East Orange, NJ, where he taught his theories of musical pedagogy and speech and vocal therapy. He wrote several secular songs and edited a number of vocal songbooks, especially for children. He was a theorist on musical methods and education. He died at Orange, NJ. L. Shorey

1851 - 1951 Person Name: Mrs. L. Shorey Hymnal Number: 10 Author of "My Lord and I" in Junior Choir L. Shorey (Mary Ann Elizabeth Lancaster, née Shorey), was born in London, Jan. 27, 1851, and now (1906) resides in Forest Drive, Leyonstone, Essex. She is the author of many hymns and poems which have appeared as leaflets, in her The Broken Angel, and other Poems, 1892, and elsewhere. Three of them, first printed in the Baptist newspaper and included in the 1902 edition of Hymns of Consecration and Faith, are:— 1. I have a Friend so precious. [The Love of Christ.] "Written one Sunday morning in the summer of 1890. While busy with household affairs some thoughts suggested by the sermon heard the previous evening (on St. Matt. xi. 29) at Leytonstone, began to shape themselves in rhyme." The complete hymn was first printed in the Baptist for Dec. 26, 1890, and then in the Broken Angel, 1892, p. 53. It has had a circulation of over 127,000 in leaflet form, and has been published in sheet form by Messrs. Weekes & Co. as My Lord and I, set to a melody said to have been sung in France by the persecuted Huguenots three hundred years ago. 2. Think of Jesus in the morning. [The Thought of Jesus.] Written Nov. 1900 and printed in the Baptist in Dec. 1900. 3. Walking with Jesus day by day. {Consecration.] Published in the Baptist in Sept. 1894.
