How are thy servants blest, O Lord!

Author: Addison Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 321 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 107 Lyrics: 1 How are thy servants blest, O Lord! How sure is their defense! Eternal wisdom is their guide, Their help omnipotence. 2 In foreign realms, and lands remote, Supported by thy care, Through burning climes they pass unhurt, And breathe in tainted air. 3 When by the dreadful tempest borne High on the broken wave, They know thou art not slow to hear, Nor impotent to save. 4 The storm is laid, the winds retire, Obedient to thy will; The sea that roars at thy command, At thy command is still. 5 In midst of dangers, fears, and deaths, Thy goodness we'll adore; We'll praise thee for thy mercies past, And humbly hope for more. 6 Our life, while thou preservest that life, Thy sacrifice shall be; And death, when death shall be out lot, Shall join our souls to thee. To God your grateful Voices raise

Appears in 8 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 107 Lyrics: 1 To God your grateful Voices raise, Who does your daily Patron prove: And let your never-ceasing Praise Attend on his eternal Love. 2,3 Let those give Thanks whom he from Bands Of proud oppressing foes releas'd; And brought them back from distant lands, From North and South, and West and East. 4,5 Through lonely desart Ways they went, Nor cou'd a peopled City find; 'Till quite with Thirst and Hunger spent, Their fainting soul within them pin'd. 6 Then soon to God's indulgent Ear Did they their mournful Cry address; Who graciously vouchsaf'd to hear, And freed them from their deep Distress. 7 From crooked Paths he led them forth, And in the certain Way did guide, To wealthy Towns of great Resort, Where all their Wants were well supply'd. 8 O then that all the Earth, with me, Would God for this his Goodness praise! And for the mighty works which he Throughout the wond'ring World displays! 9 For he from Heav'n the sad Estate Of longing souls with Pity views; To hungry souls that pant for Meat, His Goodness daily Food renews. Part II 10 Some lie, with Darkness compass'd round, In Death's uncomfortable shade; And with unweildy Fetters bound, By pressing Cares more heavy made. 11,12 Because God's Counsel they defy'd, And lightly priz'd his holy word, With these Afflictions they were try'd: They fell, and none could Help afford. 13 Then soon to God's indulgent Ear Did they their mournful Cry address; Who graciously vouchsaf'd to hear, And freed them from their deep Distress. 14 From dismal Dungeons, dark as Night. And Shades as black as Death's Abode, He brought them forth to chearful Light, And welcome Liberty bestow'd. 15 O then that all the Earth, with me, Would God for this his Goodness praise! And for the mighty works which he Throughout the wond'ring World displays! 16 For he with his almighty Hand, The Gates of Brass in Pieces broke; Nor cou'd the massy Bars withstand, Or temper'd Steel resist his Stroke. Part III 17 Remorseless Wretches, void of Sense, With bold Transgressions God defy; And for their multiply'd Offence, Oppress'd with sore Diseases lie: 18 Their soul, a Prey to Pain and Fear, Abhors to taste the choicest Meats; And they by faint Degrees draw near To Death's inhospitable Gates. 19 Then straight to God's indulgent Ear, Do they their mournful Cry address; Who graciously vouchsafes to hear, And frees them from their deep Distress. 20 He all their sad Distempers heals, His Word both Health and Safety gives; And when all human Succour fails, From near Destruction them retrieves. 21 O then that all the Earth, with me would God for this his Goodness praise! And for the mighty Works which he Throughout the wond'ring World displays! 22 With Off'rings let his Altar flame, Whilst they their grateful Thanks express, And with loud Joy his holy Name for all his Acts of Wonder bless? Part IV 23,24 They that in Ships, with Courage bold, O'er swelling Waves their Trade pursue, Do God's amazing works behold, And in the Deep his Wonders view. 25 No sooner his Command is past, But forth the dreadful Tempest flies, Which sweeps the Sea with rapid Haste, And makes the stormy Billows rise. 26 Sometimes the Ships, toss'd up to heav'n, On tops of mountain Waves appear; Then down the steep Abyss are driv'n, Whilst ev'ry soul dissolves with Fear. 27 They reel and stagger to and fro, Like Men with fumes of Wine oppress'd; Nor do the skilful Seamen know Which Way to steer, what Course is best. 28 Then straight to God's indulgent Ear They do their mournful Cry address; Who graciously vouchsafes to hear, And frees them from their deep Distress. 29,30 He does the raging Storm appease, And makes the Billows calm and still; With Joy they see their Fury cease, And their intended Course fulfil. 31 O then that all the Earth, with me, Would God for this his Goodness praise! And for the mighty Works which he Throughout the wond'ring world displays! 32 Let them, where all the Tribes resort, Advance to Heav'n his glorious Name, And in the Elders sov'reign Court With one Consent his Praise proclaim! Part V 33,34 A fruitful Land, where Streams abound, God's just Revenge, if People sin, Will turn to dry and barren Ground, To punish those that dwell therein. 35,36 The parch'd and desart Heath he makes To flow with Streams and springing Wells, Which for his Lot the Hungry takes, And in strong Cities safely dwells. 37,38 he sows the Field, the Vineyard plants, which gratefully his Toil repay; Nor can, whilst God his Blessing grants, His fruitful Seed or Stock decay. 29 But when his Sins Heav'n's Wrath provoke, His Health and Substance fade away; He feels th' Oppressor's gauling Yoke, And is of Grief the wretched Prey. 40 The prince that slights what God commands, Expos'd to Scorn, must quit his Throne; And over wild and desart lands, Where no path offers, stray alone. 41 Whilst God, from all afflicting Cares, Sets up the humble Man on high; And makes in time his num'rous Heirs With his increasing Flocks to vie. 42,43 Then Sinners shall have nought to say, The Just a decent Joy shall show; The Wise these strange Events shall weigh, And thence God's Goodness fully know.

O Praise the Lord, For He Is Good

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 7 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 107:1-9 Lyrics: 1 O praise the Lord, for he is good, his mercies still endure; thus say the ransomed of the Lord, from all their foes secure. 2 He gathered them from out the lands, from north, south, east and west. They strayed in desert's pathless way, No city found for rest. 3 Their weary soul within them faints when thirst and hunger press; in trouble then they cried to God, he saved them from distress. 4 He made the way before them straight, himself became their guide, that they might to a city go wherein they might abide. 5 O that men would Jehovah praise for all his kindness shown, and for his works so wonderful which he to men makes known! 6 Because the longing soul by him with food is satisfied, the hungry soul that looks to him with goodness is supplied. Providence equitable and kind

Meter: 8.8.8.8 Appears in 94 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 107 First Line: Thro' all the various shifting scene Lyrics: 1 Thro' all the various shifting scene Of life's mistaken ill or good; Thy hand, O God, conducts unseen The beautiful vicissitude. 2 Thou givest with paternal care, Howe'er unjustly we complain, To each their necessary share Of joy and sorrow, health and pain. 3 Trust we to youth, or friends, or power, Fix we on this terrestrial ball? When most secure, the coming hour, If thou see fit, may blast them all. 4 When lowest sunk with grief and shame, Fill'd with affliction's bitter cup, Lost to relations, friends, and fame, Thy pow'rful hand can raise us up. 5 Thy powerful consolations cheer, Thy smiles suppress the deep-fetch'd sigh, Thy hand can dry the trickling tear That secret wets the widow's eye. 6 All things on earth, and all in Heaven On thy eternal will depend; And all for greater good were given, And all shall in thy glory end. 7 This be my care; to all beside Indifferent let my wishes be; "Passion be calm; and dumb be pride, "And fix'd, O God, my soul on thee."
