F. E. Belden

1858 - 1945 Composer of "LINNIE" in Christ in Song Belden was born in Battle Creek, Michigan in 1858. He began writing music in his late teenage years after moving to California with his family. For health reasons he later moved to Colorado. He returned to Battle Creek with his wife in the early 1880s, and there he became involved in Adventist Church publishing. F. E. Belden wrote many hymn tunes, gospel songs, and related texts in the early years of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Belden was able to rapidly write both music and poetry together which enabled him to write a song to fit a sermon while it was still being delivered. He also wrote songs for evangelist Billy Sunday. Though Belden’s later years were marred by misunderstandings with the church leadership over his royalties, he did donate his papers and manuscripts to the church’s seminary at his death. 1830 - 1915 Person Name: John S. B. Hodges Composer of "HODGES" in Book of Worship with Hymns and Tunes Born: 1830, Bristol, Gloucestershire, England. Died: May 1, 1915, Baltimore, Maryland. Buried: Allegheny Cemetery, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Son of composer Edward Hodges, John emigrated to America in 1845, and attended Columbia University and the General Theological Seminary in New York City. Ordained an Episcopal minister in 1854, he served at the Grace/Second Episcopal Church, Newark, New Jersey (1860-70), and was Rector of St. Paul’s, Baltimore, Maryland, for 35 years. Harriet Reynolds Krauth Spaeth

1845 - 1925 Person Name: Harriet Reynolds Spaeth, (1845-) Adapter of "PALM SUNDAY" in The Hymnal and Order of Service Harriet Reynolds Krauth Spaeth [Harriet Krauth], 1845-1925 Born: September 21, 1845, Baltimore, Maryland. Died: May 5, 1925, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Buried: Mount Vernon Cemetery, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Daughter of hymn translator Charles Krauth, Harriet attended the Girls’ School in Philadelphia, and lived independently as a writer. In 1880, she married Adolph Spaeth, pastor of St. Johannis Church in Philadelphia (and later president of the General Council of the Lutheran Church in America). She sang contralto, played the piano and organ, and for many years was the organist at St. Stephen’s Church in west Philadelphia. She provided hymn translations for The Church Book (1868), The Sunday School Hymnal (1901), and was responsible for the music edition of The Church Book (1872). Many of her essays were published in The Lutheran. When American Lutherans adopted the Common Service in 1888, she prepared an edition with notes for chanting the service. She worked zealously for the founding of the Krauth Memorial Library at the seminary in Philadelphia, and was active in the work of the Mary J. Drexel Home, the Lankenau Hospital, and the Lutheran Orphans’ Home in Germantown, Pennsylvania. W. Stillman Martin

1862 - 1935 Person Name: W. S. M. Arranger of "[When His salvation bringing]" in Songs of Redemption and Praise. Rev. Born: March 8, 1862, Rowley, Massachusetts. Died: December 16, 1935, Atlanta, Georgia. Buried: Westview Cemetery, Atlanta, Georgia. Husband of hymnist Civilla Martin, Stillman attended Harvard University and was ordained a Baptist minister, though he later switched to the Disciples of Christ denomination. In 1916, he became a professor of Bible studies at Atlantic Christian College in Wilson, North Carolina. Three years later, he moved to Atlanta, Georgia. John King

1789 - 1858 Author of "When, His Salvation Bringing" in Children's Hymnal In H. and J. Gwyther's Psalmist, A Selection. of Psalms & Hymns, etc., Lond., 1830, there is 1 psalm version signed “J. King," and 1 psalm version and 4 hymns signed "I. King." One of the latter is "When His salvation bringing," No. 417, in 3 stanzas of 8 lines, with a chorus. This hymn is in extensive modern use. Concerning the author great, difficulty has been experienced in tracing his identity. Under date of Aug. 15, 1865, the Rev. John Gwyther informed D. Sedgwick that the signatures stood for "Joshua King, late Vicar of Hull." In a second communication, dated Aug. 19, 1865, be writes further, "Mr. Joshua King was Curate to Mr. J. Eyton, of Wellington, Shropshire, when Mr. E. made his collection of Hymns and wrote them for his Book, but whether he published them in any other form I don't know. Mr. K. gave his Hymn Book to my brother." From the Registers of Eyton Church we find that Mr. King's name was John. He graduated at Queen's College, Cambridge, B.A. 1814; became Incumbent of Christ Church, Hull, in 1822, and died Sep. 12, 1858, aged 69. --John Julian, Dictionary of Hymnology, Appendix, Part II (1907) See also Joshua King.
