William Watkins Reid

1923 - 2007 Person Name: William Watkins Reid, Jr. Hymnal Number: 8 Author of "O Thou God of Light All-Splendored" in Twelve New Lord's Day Hymns William W. Reid, Jr. (1923-2007), after graduating from Oberlin College and Seminary and Yale Divinity School served for more than fifty years as pastor in the Wyoming Conference in rural and inner-city Methodist churches. He served on the Executive Committee of The Hymn Society of America. He was involved in social issues, serving as a councilman and county commissioner. Reid, Jr. is pastor of the Methodist Church Circuit at Carverton, Pennsylvania. He previously served in a similar capacity at Camptown in the same State. He is a graduate of the Yale Divinity School and Oberlin College. He served during World War II in the Medical Corps and was held prisoner by the Germans for eight months. Carlton C. Buck

1907 - 1999 Hymnal Number: 1 Author of "This Is the Day Which Thou Hast Set Apart" in Twelve New Lord's Day Hymns Carlton C. Buck served as the Pastor of the First Christian Church of Eugene, Oregon until 1960. Prior to this he held various pastorates in Christian Churches in Southern California, including a fourteen year pastorate in Fullerton from which he came to Eugene. A native of Salina, Kansas, he lived most of his adult life on the west coast. He received a Bachelor of Sacred Music Degree from the Los Angeles Bible Seminary, a Master of Arts and an honorary D.D. from San Gabriel College. He also worked at Whittier College and Chapman College. He is the author of three books, and of numerous sacred songs; and was a member of the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers. He is the author of the Hymn Society's "O Master Teacher, Teach us Now" in Fifteen New Christian Education Hymns, and "Bless Thou Our Christian Homes, O Lord" in Marriage and Family Life Hymns. --From, Ten New Hymns on the Ministry, 1966. Frank von Christierson

1900 - 1996 Hymnal Number: 12 Author of "The Day of Christ Is Dawning" in Twelve New Lord's Day Hymns Frank von Christierson (1900-1996) was born near Helsinki, Finland. He attended San Jose (California) High School, Stanford University (BA, Psychology, 1923), and San Francisco Theological Seminary (BD 1929). In 1983 he was awarded the citation of distinguished alumnus, and became a Fellow of The Hymn Society. He has served as youth director at First Presbyterian Church, San Luis Obispo, and pastor at Calvary Presbyterian Church, Citrus Heights, California. He has published a hymnal collection entitled Make a Joyful Noise (1987) and is represented in many hymnals. Three of his hymn texts have been included in the new Hope hymnal Worship & Rejoice (2001). http://www.hopepublishing.com/html ========================= After serving for thirty-seven years as a minister of the United Presbyterian Church in Berkeley, North Hollywood and Sacramento, California, Rev. Frank con Christierson has retired to serve as "Interim minister" in the Central Area of the Synod of California. He has been moderator of San Francisco Presbytery and of Los Angeles Presbytery, and has just completed three years as chairman of radio and television for the Sacramento Area Council of Churches. Born in Finland, he was brought to America as a boy of four. He is a graduate of Stanford University and of San Francisco Theological Seminary. Robert Lansing Edwards

1915 - 2006 Hymnal Number: 2 Author of "Day of the Lord, Ordained for Our Repose" in Twelve New Lord's Day Hymns Robert Lansing Edwards was born in Auburn, NY on 5 August 1915. He graduated from Princeton University in 1937. He earned an MA in history from Harvard University in 1938, and a Master of Divinity degree from Union Theological University in 1949. He was minister at First Congregational Church, Litchfield, Conn. for 7 years and was minister at Immanuel Congregational Church in Hartford, Conn. from 1956 until 1980. He was active in establishing low income senior housing, in prison ministry and with other community endeavors. He wrote several hymn texts as well as four books including Of Singular Genius, Of Singular Grace, a biography of Horace Bushnell, a famous pastor from Hartford; and his autobiography My Moment in History. Ernest Edwin Ryden

1886 - 1981 Hymnal Number: 11 Author of "O Glorious Day, When Thou, the God of Light" in Twelve New Lord's Day Hymns Ernest Edwin Ryden is a distinguished Lutheran clergyman who has been a life-long student of hymns. At present he is pastor of Emanuel Lutheran Church in North Grosvenordale, Connecticut. This is the latest of a long series of services he has rendered in the Lutheran Church. For twenty-seven years he was editor of "The Lutheran Companion," the official organ of the former Augustana Lutheran Church. His contributions to hymnody were many. He was a member of the Committee which created the Augustana Hymnal of 1925 to which he contributed eight original hymns and translations. He was co-editor of the Junior Hymnal for which he wrote a number of hymns. He was secretary of the committee which prepared the Service Book and Hymnal. Here again he has contributed new hymns and translations. He is the author of two volumes, "The Story of Our Hymns," and "The Story of Christian Hymnody." In 1949 he was made a Knight of the Royal Order of the North Star by the King of Sweden for his work in the field of hymnological research. Ernest K. Emurian

1912 - 2004 Hymnal Number: 4 Author of "O Thou Who at Creation's Dawn" in Twelve New Lord's Day Hymns Born: February 20, 1912, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Died: January 23, 2004, Alexandria, Virginia. Buried: Columbia Gardens Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia. Son of an Armenian immigrant pastor, Emurian attended Davidson College, North Carolina (BA); Union Theological Seminary, Virginia (BD); and Princeton Theological Seminary, New Jersey (ThM). Randolph-Macon College of Virginia also conferred an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree on him in 1971. Emurian served as pastor of the Cherrydale United Methodist Church, Arlington, Virginia, for 19 years, until retiring in 1981. He wrote some 19 books and 60 hymns, as well as hymn tunes, anthems, and popular songs. Methodist. Parents were William Reid, a native of Moneymore, near Belfast, and Sarah Watkins of Londonderry. Came to the United States in 1900. Attended New York University (bachelor's degree, 1915; master's degree in journalism, 1917). Served The Hymn Society as President, Executive Director, and Editor of The Hymn from 1966 to 1976. Authored the Hymn Society's 40th anniversary history, Sing with Spirit and Understanding. Also edited The Pastor's Journal for the Methodist church and worked as its director of the News Service of the Board of Missions.
