Psalm 105 Abridged

Author: Isaac Watts Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 65 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 105 First Line: Give thanks to God, invoke his name Lyrics: Give thanks to God, invoke his name, And tell the world his grace; Sound through the earth his deeds of fame, That all may seek his face. His cov'nant, which he kept in mind For num'rous ages past, To num'rous ages yet behind In equal force shall last. He sware to Abraham and his seed, And made the blessing sure; Gentiles the ancient promise read, And find his truth endure. "Thy seed shall make all nations blest," (Said the Almighty voice,) "And Canaan's land shall be their rest, The type of heav'nly joys." [How large the grant! how rich the grace, To give them Canaan's land, When they were strangers in the place, A little feeble band! Like pilgrims through the countries round Securely they removed; And haughty kings that on them frowned Severely he reproved. "Touch mine anointed, and my arm Shall soon revenge the wrong: The man that does my prophets harm, Shall know their God is strong." Then let the world forbear its rage, Nor put the church in fear; Isr'el must live through every age, And be th' Almighty's care.] When Pharaoh dared to vex the saints, And thus provoked their God, Moses was sent at their complaints, Armed with his dreadful rod. He called for darkness; darkness came Like an o'erwhelming flood; He turned each lake and every stream To lakes and streams of blood. He gave the sign, and noisome flies Through the whole country spread; And frogs in croaking armies rise About the monarch's bed. Through fields, and towns, and palaces, The tenfold vengeance flew; Locusts in swarms devoured their trees, And hail their cattle slew. Then by an angel's midnight stroke The flower of Egypt died; The strength of every house was broke, Their glory and their pride. Now let the world forbear its rage, Nor put the church in fear; Isr'el must live through every age, And be th' Almighty's care. Thus were the tribes from bondage brought, And left the hated ground; Each some Egyptian spoils had got, And not one feeble found. The Lord himself chose out their way, And marked their journeys right; Gave them a leading cloud by day, A fiery guide by night. They thirst, and waters from the rock In rich abundance flow; And following still the course they took, Ran all the desert through. O wondrous stream! O blessed type Of ever-flowing grace! So Christ, our Rock, maintains our life Through all this wilderness. Thus guarded by th' Almighty hand, The chosen tribes possessed Canaan, the rich, the promised land, And there enjoyed their rest. Then let the world forbear its rage, The church renounce her fear; Isr'el must live through every age, And be th' Almighty's care. Psalm 105: Give thanks to God, call on his name

Meter: 8.6.8.6 Appears in 23 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 105 First Line: Give thanks to God, call on his name Lyrics: 1Give thanks to God, call on his name; to men his deeds make known. 2Sing ye to him, sing psalms; proclaim his wondrous works each one. 3See that ye in his holy name to glory do accord; And let the heart of ev’ry one rejoice that seeks the Lord. 4The Lord Almighty, and his strength, with stedfast hearts seek ye: His blessed and his gracious face seek ye continually. 5Think on the works that he hath done, which admiration breed; His wonders, and the judgments all which from his mouth proceed; 6O ye that are of Abr’ham’s race, his servant well approv’n; And ye that Jacob’s children are, whom he chose for his own. 7Because he, and he only, is the mighty Lord our God; And his most righteous judgments are in all the earth abroad. 8His cov’nant he remember’d hath, that it may ever stand: To thousand generations the word he did command. 9Which covenant he firmly made with faithful Abraham, And unto Isaac, by his oath, he did renew the same: 10And unto Jacob, for a law, he made it firm and sure, A covenant to Israel, which ever should endure. 11He said, I’ll give Canaan’s land for heritage to you; 12While they were strangers there, and few, in number very few: 13While yet they went from land to land without a sure abode; And while through sundry kingdoms they did wander far abroad; 14Yet, notwithstanding suffer’d he no man to do them wrong: Yea, for their sakes, he did reprove kings, who were great and strong. 15Thus did he say, Touch ye not those that mine anointed be, Nor do the prophets any harm that do pertain to me. 16He call’d for famine on the land, he brake the staff of bread: 17But yet he sent a man before, by whom they should be fed; Ev’n Joseph, whom unnat’rally sell for a slave did they; 18Whose feet with fetters they did hurt, and he in irons lay; 19Until the time that his word came to give him liberty; The word and purpose of the Lord did him in prison try. 20Then sent the king, and did command that he enlarg’d should be: He that the people’s ruler was did send to set him free. 21A lord to rule his family he rais’d him, as most fit; To him of all that he possess’d he did the charge commit: 22That he might at his pleasure bind the princes of the land; And he might teach his senators wisdom to understand. 23The people then of Israel down into Egypt came; And Jacob also sojourned within the land of Ham. 24And he did greatly by his pow’r increase his people there; And stronger than their enemies they by his blessing were. 25Their heart he turned to envy his folk maliciously, With those that his own servants were to deal in subtilty. 26His servant Moses he did send, Aaron his chosen one. 27By these his signs and wonders great in Ham’s land were made known. 28Darkness he sent, and made it dark; his word they did obey. 29He turn’d their waters into blood, and he their fish did slay. 30The land in plenty brought forth frogs in chambers of their kings. 31His word all sorts of flies and lice in all their borders brings. 32He hail for rain, and flaming fire into their land he sent: 33And he their vines and fig-trees smote: trees of their coasts he rent. 34He spake, and caterpillars came, locusts did much abound; 35Which in their land all herbs consum’d, and all fruits of their ground. 36He smote all first-born in their land, chief of their strength each one. 37With gold and silver brought them forth, weak in their tribes were none. 38Egypt was glad when forth they went, their fear on them did light. 39He spread a cloud for covering, and fire to shine by night. 40They ask’d, and he brought quails: with bread of heav’n he filled them. 41He open’d rocks, floods gush’d, and ran in deserts like a stream. 42For on his holy promise he, and servant Abr’ham, thought. 43With joy his people, his elect with gladness, forth he brought. 44And unto them the pleasant lands he of the heathen gave; That of the people’s labour they inheritance might have. 45That they his statutes might observe according to his word; And that they might his laws obey. Give praise unto the Lord.

Glorious Things of You Are Spoken

Author: John Newton Meter: 8.7.8.7 D Appears in 1,301 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 105:39-41 Lyrics: 1 Glorious things of you are spoken, Zion, city of our God. He whose word cannot be broken formed you for his own abode. On the Rock of Ages founded, what can shake your sure repose? With salvation's walls surrounded, you may smile at all your foes. 2 See, the streams of living waters, springing from eternal love, well supply your sons and daughters and all fear of want remove. Who can faint while such a river ever will their thirst assuage? Grace which, like the Lord, the giver, never fails from age to age. 3 Round each habitation hovering, see the cloud and fire appear for a glory and a covering, showing that the Lord is near. Thus deriving from their banner light by night and shade by day, safe they feed upon the manna which God gives them on their way. 4 Savior, since of Zion's city I through grace a member am, let the world deride or pity, I will glory in your name. Fading are the world's best pleasures, all its boasted pomp and show; solid joys and lasting treasures none but Zion's children know. O render Thanks and bless the Lord

Appears in 38 hymnals Scripture: Psalm 105 Lyrics: 1 O render Thanks and bless the Lord; invoke his sacred Name; Acquaint the Nations with his Deeds, his matchless Deeds proclaim, 2 Sing to his Praise, in lofty Hymns his wondrous Works rehearse; Make them the Theme of your Discourse, and Subject of your Verse. 3 Rejoice in his Almighty Name, alone to be ador'd; And let their Hearts o'erflow with Joy, that humbly see the Lord. 4 Seek ye the Lord, his saving Strength devoutly still implore; And where he's ever present, seek his Face for evermore. 5 The Wonders that his Hands have wrought, keep thankfully in Mind; The righteous Statutes of his Mouth, and Laws to us assign'd. 6 Know ye his Servant Abr'am's Seed and Jacob's chosen Race, 7 He's still our God, his Judgments still throughout the Earth take place. 8 His Cov'nant he hath kept in Mind for num'rous Ages past, Which yet for thousand Ages more, in equal Force shall last. 9 First sign'd to Abr'am, next by Oath to Isaac made secure; 10 To Jacob and his Heirs a Law for ever to endure: 11 That Canaan's Land should be their Lot, when yet but few they were: 12 But few in Number, and those few all friendless Strangers there. 13 In Pilgrimage, from Realm to Realm, securely they remov'd; 14 Whilst proudest Monarchs for their sakes, severely he reprov'd: 15 "These mine Anointed are, said he, "let none my Servants wrong, "Nor treat the poorest Prophet ill "that does to me belong." 16 A Dearth at last, by his Command, did through the land prevail; 'Till Corn, the chief Support of Life, sustaining Corn did fail. 17 But his indulgent Providence had pious Joseph sent, Sold into Egypt, but their Death who sold him to prevent. 18 His Feet with heavy Chains were crush'd, with Calumny his Fame; 19 'Till God's appointed Time and word to his Deliv'rance came. 20 The King his Sov'reign order sent, and rescu'd him with Speed; Whom private malice had confin'd, the People's ruler freed. 21 His Courts, Revenues, Realms, were all subjected to his Will; 22 His greatest Princes to controul, and teach his Statesmen Skill. Part II 23 To Egypt then, invited Guests, half-famish'd Isr'el came; And Jacob held, by Royal Grant, the fertile Soils of Ham. 24 Th' Almighty there with such Increase his People multiply'd, 'Till with their proud Oppressors they in Strength and Number vy'd. 25 Their vast Increase th' Egyptian Hearts with jealous Anger fir'd, 'Till they his Servants to destroy by treach'rous Arts conspir'd. 26 His Servant Moses then he sent, his chosen Aaron too; 27 Empower'd with Signs and Miracles to prove their Mission true. 28 He call'd for Darkness, Darkness came, Nature his Summons knew; 29 Each Stream and Lake, transform'd to Blood, the wand'ring Fishes slew. 30 In putrid Floods, throughout the Land, the Pest of Frogs was bred; From noisome Fens sent up to croak at Pharaoh's Board and Bed. 31 He gave the Sign, and Swarms of Flies came down in cloudy Hosts; Whilst Earth's enlivin'd Dust below bread Lice through all their Coasts. 32 He sent them batt'ring Hail for Rain, and Fire for cooling Dew. 33 He smote their Vines, and Forest Plants, and Garden's Pride o'erthrew. 34 He spake the word, and Locusts came, and Caterpillars join'd; They prey'd upon the poor Remains the Storm had left behind. 35 From Trees to Herbage they descend, no verdant Thing they spare; But like the naked fallow Field, leave all the Pastures bare. 36 From Fields to Villages and Towns, commission'd Vengeance slew One fatal Stroke their eldest Hopes and Strength of Egypt flew. 37 He brought his Servants forth, enrich'd with Egypt's borrow'd Wealth; And, what transcends all Treasures else, enrich'd with vig'rous Health. 38 Egypt rejoic'd, in hopes to find her Plagues with them remov'd; Taught dearly now to fear worse Ills by those already prov'd. 39 Their shrouding Canopy by Day a journeying Cloud was spread: A fiery Pillar all the Night their desart Marches led. 40 They long'd for Flesh; with Ev'ning Quails he furnish'd ev'ry Tent: From Heav'n's own Granary, each Morn, the Bread of Angels sent. 41 He smote the rock; whose flinty Breast pour'd forth a gushing Tide, Whose flowing Stream, where'er they march'd, the Desart's Drought supply'd. 42 For still he did on Abr'am's Faith and ancient League reflect; 43 He brought his People forth with Joy, with Triumph his Elect. 44 Quite rooting out their Heathen Foes from Canaan's fertile soil, To them in cheap Possession gave the Fruit of others Toil: 45 That they his Statutes might observe, his sacred Laws obey. For Benefits so fast, let us our Songs of Praise repay.
