Johnson studied and taught music at Wheaton College, Illinois, where future evangelist Billy Graham was one of his students. He is said to have written that Graham "was a poor trumpet player, but I understood he had other talents." In 1935, Orien and his wife Lillian moved to Seattle, Washington, where he became music director at Ballard High School. He also headed the Ballard Young Life Club until moving to Colorado Springs around 1947. There, he led the Cañon City Young Life Club, directed the choir at the Colorado Springs First Presbyterian Church, and was director of Public Relations for the Young Life organization.
