John was the son of Stephen Yates Hammond (1809-1892) and Martha Adams Hammond (1809-1863), and husband of Sarah Elizabeth Powers Hammond (1843-1918). A minister like his father, he served in the Genesee (now Western New York) Conference, the Wisconsin & Nevada Conference, and the California Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
