A music historian and composer, Burney attended Shrewsbury School and the Free School, Chester. He was apprenticed to Thomas Arne from 1744 to 1746. In 1749, he became organist at St. Dionis’ Backchurch, London. In 1751 moved to King’s Lynn, Norfolk, where he taught and played the organ. His works include:

A General History of Music, from the Earliest Ages to the Present Period (London: 1776-89)

Wikipedia Biography

Charles Burney FRS (7 April 1726 – 12 April 1814) was an English music historian, composer and musician. He was the father of the writers Frances Burney and Sarah Burney, of the explorer James Burney, and of Charles Burney, a classicist and book donor to the British Museum. He was a close friend and supporter of Joseph Haydn.
