248. Spirit of Truth and Mighty

1 Spirit of truth and might,
‘Tis Thou alone can teach
Both young and old to sue aright
The wondrous pow’r of speech:

2 The pow’r to soothe and cheer,
Or else to wound and pain;
The pow’r to spread God’s holy fear,
Or take His Name in vain.

3 The tongue can no man tame;
It is a deadly ill;
And hence Thy gracious aid we claim
To bend it to Thy will.

4 Oh, let Thy sacred light
Inspire both age and youth
To pray, to praise, to warn, to fight
The glorious fight of Truth.

5 So if our words below
Be prompted by Thy love,
We trust one day to hear and know
The speech of saints above.
