48. Servant of God and Son of Man

1. Servant of God and Son of Man,
Eternal Son of God Most High,
Fulfill the great redeeming plan,
Which brought you, Savior, from the sky,
Anointed by his Spirit and sealed,
With all His glorious fullness filled.

2. His soul’s delight, his best beloved,
Give us yourself and him to know;
The righteousness by God approved,
To us poor sinful Gentiles show;
The righteousness that faith imparts,
Impute, implant it on our hearts.

3. Not with a loud, uplifted voice
Will you compel mankind to hear,
With strife and violence, and noise!
But when a soul inclines its ear,
You will the prostrate sinner raise
By the soft whisper of your grace.

4. You will not crush the poor and weak;
Your tender heart can never bear
A reed already bruised to break,
To plunge the fearful in despair,
Or aggravate a sinner's load,
Or quench the faintest spark of good.

5. Discouraged at our wayward ways,
We trust you, that you will not fail,
But carry on the work of grace
Till mercy over sin prevails,
And fix on Earth your righteous throne,
And reign in all our hearts alone.

6. Me, me, who still in darkness sits,
Shut up in sin and unbelief,
Bring forth out of this hellish pit,
This dungeon of dispairing grief;
Lord, bear the stain of sin away
And raise me to eternal day.
