23b. O Emmanuel

1. O child whose name is God-with-Us,
For God and flesh are one,
And putting on our nature thus
Brings aid to the undone:

2. Not as a king you meet us now,
No gold your throne adorns,
No royal crown is on your brow,
Except a crown of thorns.

3. You come to suffer scorn and pain
And die upon a cross
And all because you did ordain
To join as one with us.

4. You come a holy law to teach,
A perfect rule to set,
Give blind their sight, and mute their speech,
And be rejected yet.

5. Oh, make us one with you below,
In heart, and will, and love,
And when our time draws near to go,
Still keep us one above!

6. We wait in faith, we wait in prayer
Until the happy morn
When you will come our flesh to share
And for ours sakes be born.

7. To God, from whom all blessings spring,
Are praise and glory due,
Same glory to the coming King,
And Holy Ghost, to you.
