Text: | Alas! and Did My Saviour |
Author: | Isaac Watts |
Tune: | [Alas! and did my Saviour bleed] |
Composer: | Herbert G. Tovey |
1 Alas! and did my Saviour bleed
And did my Sov’reign die?
Would He devote that sacred head
For such a worm as I?
Refrain:
Now I will glory in the cross,
For this I count the world but dross.
There I with Christ was crucified;
His death is mine; with Him I died;
And while I live my song shall be,
No longer I, but Christ in me.
2 Was it for crimes that I had done,
He groan’d upon the tree?
Amazing pity! grace unknown!
And love beyond degree! [Refrain]
3 Well might the sun in darkness hide,
And shut his glories in,
When Christ, the mighty Maker died
For man the creature's sin. [Refrain]
4 But drops of grief can ne'er repay
The debt of love I owe:
Here, Lord, I give myself away,—
'Tis all that I can do. [Refrain]
