65. Out Of The Depths I Cry To Thee

1 Out of the depths I cry to Thee;
Lord, hear me, I implore Thee.
Incline Thy gracious ear to me
As I appear before Thee.
If Thou remember each misdeed
And give to each his rightful meed,
Who can abide Thy presence?

2 Thy pardon, Lord, is gained through grace:
It can alone avail us.
Our works can ne'er our guilt efface,
The strictest life must fail us.
Before Thee none can boast of aught;
To fear Thee we are rightly taught,
On grace alone depending.

3 My hope is, therefore, in the Lord,
And not in mine own merit;
I rest upon His faithful word
To them of contrite spirit;
That He is merciful and just,
This is my comfort and my trust:
I wait for Him in patience.

4 And though I tarry till the night
And till the morn awaken,
My heart shall not mistrust His might
Nor count itself forsaken.
Do thus, O ye of Israel's seed,
Ye of the Spirit born indeed,
Wait for your God's appearing.

5 Though great our sins and sore our woes,
His grace much more aboundeth;
His helping love no limit knows,
Our utmost need it soundeth.
Our Shepherd good and true is He,
Who will at last set Israel free
From all their sin and sorrow.
