I'm So Grateful / When my friends and my foes turn against me

You are here

This is my first post to Hymnary User Room (8 years after I first logged into Hymnary). In the Thanksgiving section of Lead Me, Guide Me 1987, I discovered yesterday "I Am So Grateful," first line "When my friends and my foes turn against me," words and music attributed to Gloria Griffin, harmonized by Roberta Martin (c)1965. Griffin joined the Roberta Martin Singers in 1957, according to wiki. So I think Hymnary's attribution of Text "I'm So Grateful" <https://hymnary.org/text/when_my_friends_and_my_foes> to Gloria Gaither is probably incorrect, though I don't have access to Hymnary's only cited Instance, #48 in the 1977 edition of The New National Baptist Hymnal‎. I did not find this song in Hymnary's index to Lead Me, Guide Me (2nd ed.) 2012, nor in its index to African American Heritage Hymnal 2001 (which I think is related somehow to Lead Me, Guide Me).

I also did not find this song in either New National Baptist Hymnal 21st Century Edition 2001 810pp <https://archive.org/details/newnationalbapti0000unse_u3g2> or New National Baptist Hymnal 21st Century Edition March 2002 822pp <https://archive.org/details/newnationalbapti0000unse_y1f0/page/n801/mode/2up>.

I also found a recording of "I'm Grateful" by the Roberta Martin Singers, with leads by Gloria Griffin and Deloris Barrett, a free rendition, loosely following score in Lead Me Guide Me 1987 <https://youtu.be/bn18b6swQPg?si=E1BJaildK0KdZQZN>.
