Song of Hannah

My soul is filled with joy in God my Savior,
for he has lifted me and set me high.
There is no Holy One, no Rock like our God;
he answered my request, he heard my cry.

Notes

Hughes M. Huffman (PHH 123) composed VIOLA in 1976. InterVarsity Christian Fellowship first published the tune in Hymns II (1976) and used it widely at the 1976 IVCF Urbana Conference as a setting for E. Margaret Clarkson's text "Our God Is Mighty." A strong tune with a bold harmonization that suits the "Song of Hannah" well, VIOLA is published in the Psalter Hymnal without its original refrain. Sing in unison with much joy and with bright, full organ registration, but keep a sustained tempo.

--Psalter Hymnal Handbook

[This tune was included in the first printing Hymns II; however, in later printings of Hymns II the tune JANUS by Donald P. Hustad was substituted as a setting for Clarkson's text (entitled here "Declare His Glory"). The combination of VIOLA/Our God Is Mighty appears in the Trinity Hymnal, 1990 as hymn #454.]
