This song was writÂten while StebÂbins was helpÂing Dr. George PenÂteÂcost in evanÂgelÂisÂtic meetÂings in WorÂcesÂter, MassÂaÂchuÂsetts: During those meetÂings, one of the subÂjects preached upÂon was the "New Birth." While preÂsentÂing the truth, enÂforcÂing it by reÂferÂring to varÂiÂous passÂagÂes of ScripÂture, Dr. PenÂteÂcost quotÂed our Lord’s words to NiÂcoÂdemÂus, "VerÂiÂly, verÂiÂly, I say unÂto thee, ye must be born again"…It ocÂcurred to me that by takÂing the line "VerÂiÂly, verÂiÂly, I say unÂto thee," from the third verse, and putÂting it with the line, "Ye must be born again," and by transÂferÂring the word "I" from the midÂdle of the first line to the beÂginÂning, so it would read, "I verÂiÂly, verÂiÂly, say unÂto thee, Ye must be born again," those pasÂsagÂes would then fall inÂto rhythÂmicÂal form, and by the use of some reÂpeÂtiÂtions could be made availÂaÂble for a muÂsicÂal setÂting, and alÂso for a chorÂus to the hymn, if some suitÂaÂble versÂes could be found…I spoke to RevÂerÂend…SleepÂer, one of the pasÂtors of the ciÂty who someÂtimes wrote hymns, of my imÂpressÂion and asked him if he would write me some versÂes on the subÂject. He actÂed at once on my sugÂgestÂion and soon afÂter came to me with the hymn…BeÂfore the meetÂings closed a muÂsicÂal setÂting was made. George Stebbins, MemÂoirs and RemÂiÂnisÂcencÂes
