Representative Text

1 We are nearing eternity’s side of the grave,
And time is swift passing away;
Soon the years of probation for us will be gone,
Fast hasteneth the great judgement day.

Chorus:
And now is the time to get ready,
And now is the time to get ready,
‘Tis coming, ‘tis coming the great judgment day,
And now is the time to get ready;
‘Tis coming, ‘tis coming the great judgment day,
And now is the time to get ready.

2 In the day of His wrath and His pow’r who shall stand,
When the thunders of judgment appall?
When the heav’n’s as a scroll shall together be rolled?
When rocks and when mountains shall fall. [Chorus]

3 When the Shepherd the sheep from the goats shall divide,
The wheat from the tares separate,
When the books shall be opened and all shall appear,
The dead shall arise, small and great. [Chorus]

4 Sinner turn to the Savior, the better part choose,
Accept His salvation so free;
That the judgment for thee, all its terror shall lose,
Thy Savior thy judge too shall be. [Chorus]

Author: Mrs. C. H. Morris

Lelia (Mrs. C.H.) Morris (1862-1929) was born in Pennsville, Morgan County, Ohio. When her family moved to Malta on the Muskingum River she and her sister and mother had a millinery shop in McConnelsville. She and her husband Charles H. Morris were active in the Methodist Episcopal Church and at the camp meetings in Sebring and Mt. Vernon. She wrote hymns as she did her housework. Although she became blind at age 52 she continued to write hymns on a 28-foot long blackboard that her family had built for her. She is said to have written 1000 texts and many tunes including "Sweeter as the years go by." Mary Louise VanDyke Go to person page >
