linger on the trembling chords;
let the "little while" between
in their golden light be seen;
let us think how heav'n and home
lie beyond that "Till he come."

2 See, the feast of love is spread,
drink the wine and break the bread -
sweet memorials - till the Lord
call us round his heav'nly board;
some from earth, from glory some,
severed only "Till he come!"

Author: Edward Henry Bickersteth

Bickersteth, Edward Henry, D.D., son of Edward Bickersteth, Sr. born at Islington, Jan. 1825, and educated at Trinity College, Cambridge (B.A. with honours, 1847; M.A., 1850). On taking Holy Orders in 1848, he became curate of Banningham, Norfolk, and then of Christ Church, Tunbridge Wells. His preferment to the Rectory of Hinton-Martell, in 1852, was followed by that of the Vicarage of Christ Church, Hampstead, 1855. In 1885 he became Dean of Gloucester, and the same year Bishop of Exeter. Notes

Till he come, O let the words. Bishop Bickersteth. [Holy Communion.] Written in 1861 and first published in his work The Blessed Dead, 1862, and subsequently in his Supplement to Psalms and Hymns, No. 41; The Two Brothers, 1871; and the 1870, 1876, and 1890 editions of the Hymnal Companion. The author says that it is given in his Hymnal Companion as presenting "one aspect of the Lord's Supper which is passed over in many hymnals, 'Ye do show forth the Lord's death till He come'; and also our communion with those of whom we say “We bless Thy holy Name for all Thy servants departed this life in Thy faith and fear.'" It is in several hymn-books.
