1 Tho’ friends may deceive me and troubles draw night,
Tho’ dark clouds may gather above in the sky;
When lying before me the pathway looks dim,
I can never fear, if I keep close to Him.

Refrain:
Close to Jesus thro’ the night and day,
Close to Jesus all along the way;
What tho’ the heavens above me look dim,
I am safe and happy if I keep close to Him.

2 In ev’ry temptation I know He is near,
With words of compassion to comfort and cheer;
He sets a bright rain before me the pathway looks dim,
And sustaining grace, if I keep close to Him. [Refrain]

3 In sunshine and shower by me doth He stand,
Each day I am under His sheltering hand;
My cup of rejoicing He fills to the brim,

Lizzie De Armond was a prolific writer of children's hymns, recitations and exercises. When she was twelve years old her first poem was published in the Germantown, Pa. Telegraph, however, it was not until she was a widow with eight children to support that she started writing in earnest. She wrote articles, librettos, nature stories and other works, as well as hymns.
