1 They tenderly lowered His form from the cross,
Which stood upon Calv’ry’s hill;
Each heart was dismayed as they tho’t of their loss,
The voice which they loved was still.
Refrain:
Come see the place where He lay,
Come see the place where He lay;
He is not here, He is risen,
Come see the place where He lay.
2 They gently and sadly did bear Him away,
And laid Him in Joseph’s tomb,
They knew not that soon, at the break of the day,
He’d rise from that place of gloom. [Refrain]
3 It seemed that their hopes were all buried with Him,
They trusted that He would save;
And now that their eyes with sore weeping were dim,
They saw not beyond the grave. [Refrain]
4 The stone which they tho’t they could never remove,
Was rolled from the open gate;
They bro’t their sweet spices, the emblems of love,
But lo! they were all too late. [Refrain]
5 For He whom they mourned is alive from the dead,
And never will die again;
And over the tomb a new light has been shed,
Since He in the grave has laid. [Refrain]
