Once more we meet to pray. [Lent.] We have traced this hymn to Matthew Wilks's enlarged edition of G. Whitefield's Collection of Hymns…Corrected and Enlarged, with some Original Hymns, &c, Lond., 1798, No. 300. It is in 4 stanzas of 4 lines, and headed "Distress." It subsequently appeared in several collections, including the American Baptist Psalmist, 1843; Spurgeon's Our Own Hymn Book, 1866, and others. In Spurgeon the text of stanza iv. is slightly altered. This appears to be one of the ”Original Hymns" named in Wilks's title page, but whether by him or not we cannot say.
