I Ansigt slaget, ynkelig forhaanet,
Ædikk' og Galde dig paa Korset gives,
Og du aflives.

3 Hvad Aarsag er til alle disse Plager?
Ak, det er mine synder, som dig nager;
Det jeg forskyldte, vilde du, o Herre,
Taalmodig bære.

4 Hvor underlig er denne Straffens Byrde:
For sine Faar aflives Sjælens Hyrde,
Al Skyld maa den retvise Gud betale
I Sted for Alle.

5 Den Fromme dør, som ret oprigtig vandrer,
DenOnde lever, som mod Gud mishandler;

Vist evig lide.

7 Du saa min Nød, og kjendte Nedningsmaade;
Du villig gik for mig i Dødens Vaade;
Og jeg, jeg døsede i Verdens Glæde,
Mens du ma græde.

8 Ak, store Konge, stor i Himlens Sæde,

Dig ret at dyrke!

Af lyst til dig al Verden Intet agte;

14 Naar, Herre Jesu, for din Glædethrone
Skal paa mit Hoved staa en Ærekrone,
Da vil jeg dig med hellig Engletunge
Lov og Tak sjunge.

Johann Heermann's (b. Raudten, Silesia, Austria, 1585; d. Lissa, Posen [now Poland], 1647) own suffering and family tragedy led him to meditate on Christ's undeserved suffering. The only surviving child of a poor furrier and his wife, Heermann fulfilled his mother's vow at his birth that, if he lived, he would become a pastor. Initially a teacher, Heermann became a minister in the Lutheran Church in Koben in 1611 but had to stop preaching in 1634 due to a severe throat infection. He retired in 1638. Much of his ministry took place during the Thirty Years' War. At times he had to flee for his life and on several occasions lost all his possessions. Although Heermann wrote many of his hymns and poems during these devastating times, his persona… Go to person page >

In some hymnals, the editors noted that a hymn's author is unknown to them, and so this artificial "person" entry is used to reflect that fact. Obviously, the hymns attributed to "Author Unknown" "Unknown" or "Anonymous" could have been written by many people over a span of many centuries. Go to person page >
