O Gladsome Light

Representative Text

1. O gladsome light, O grace
Of God the Father’s face,
Th’ eternal splendor wearing,
Celestial, holy, blest,
Our Savior, Jesus Christ,
Joyful in thine appearing:

2. Now ere day fadeth quite,
We see the evening light,
Our wonted hymn outpouring;
Father of might unknown,
Thee, his incarnate Son,
And Holy Spir’t adoring.

3. To thee of right belongs
All praise of holy songs,
O Son of God, Life-giver.
Thee therefore, O most high,
The world doth glorify,
And shall exalt forever.

Bridges published The Yattendon Hymnal (1899), a collection of one hundred hymns (forty-four written or translated by him with settings mainly from the Genevan psalter, arranged for unaccompanied singing. In addition to volumes… Go to person page >

Author: Anonymous

In some hymnals, the editors noted that a hymn's author is unknown to them, and so this artificial "person" entry is used to reflect that fact. Obviously, the hymns attributed to "Author Unknown" "Unknown" or "Anonymous" could have been written by many people over a span of many centuries. Go to person page >

NUNC DIMITTIS (Bourgeois)

Louis Bourgeois (PHH 3) composed NUNC DIMITTIS for the Song of Simeon; the tune was first published in the 1547 edition of the Genevan Psalter.
