O Father, in Thy Father's heart

1 O Father, in Your father-heart
we know our children have their part;
we sign them in Your threefold Name,
and by the sprinkled water claim
Your covenant in Christ revealed,
to us and to our children sealed.

2 Name of the Father, pledge that we
in You our inmost being see;
Name of the Son, whereby we know
the Father's love to all below;
Name of the Spirit, blessed sign
that now we share the life divine.

3 Fulfil Your covenant of love;
baptise our children from above;
Your best, Your highest gift impart,
the blessing of a childlike heart,
and mould them through life's strain and stress
to the full growth of perfectness.

Author: Ella S. Armitage

E. S. A. The initials of Ella Sophia Armitage, née Bulley, daughter of S. M. Bulley, of Liverpool, and granddaughter of T. Raffles, D.D. (p. 948, ii.). She was born at Liverpool, March 3, 1841, and married in 1874 to the Rev. E. Armitage, M.A., now (1891) Theological Professor in the Congregational United College, Bradford. Mrs. Armitage has published: (1) The Childhood of the English Nation; (2) The Connection of England and Scotland; (3) The Education of a Christian Home; and (4) a Service of Song entitled The Garden of the Lord, Lond., Novello, 1881.
