Representative Text

1 My soul and I had wandered far,
From deepest deeps, to widest star,
And weary, worn and tempest-rocked,
Came to the heav’nly gate and knocked,
Came to the heav’nly gate and knocked.
“Who is there?” said the heav’nly Friend, “Who is there?”
“I! myself!” was the answer;
And to my soul and I,
Came sad reply,
More sad than sorrow’s self may be,
“There is not room, not room for thee and Me!
There is no room, not room for thee and Me!”

2 My soul and I went wand’ring far,
Waging the spirit’s weary war,
And knocked again at the heav’nly gate,
When the lamp of life was burning late,
When the lamp of life was burning late.
“Who is there?” said the heav’nly Friend, “Who is there?”
“Thou! Thyself!” was the answer;
And to my soul and I,
Came sweet reply,
As the heav’nly gate swung open wide,
Cast out self! And I will abide, abide in thee, and thou in Me,
In heav’n there is room for Me and thee,
In heav’n there’s room, there’s room for Me and thee.”
