1 Lord of my life! O may Thy praise
Employ my noblest powers;
Whose goodness lengthens out my days,
And fills the circling hours.

2 Preserved by Thine almighty arm,
I pass the shades of night,
Serene and safe from every harm,
And see returning light.

3 When sleep, death's semblance, o'er me spread,
And I unconscious lay;
Thy watchful care was round my bed
To guard my feeble clay.

4 O let the same almighty care
My waking hours attend:
From every trespass, every snare,
My heedless steps defend.

5 Smile on my minutes as they roll,
And guide my future days;
And let Thy goodness fill my soul
With gratitude and praise.

Author: Anne Steele

Anne Steele was the daughter of Particular Baptist preacher and timber merchant William Steele. She spent her entire life in Broughton, Hampshire, near the southern coast of England, and devoted much of her time to writing. Some accounts of her life portray her as a lonely, melancholy invalid, but a revival of research in the last decade indicates that she had been more active and social than what was previously thought. She was theologically conversant with Dissenting ministers and "found herself at the centre of a literary circle that included family members from various generations, as well as local literati." Lord of my life, O may Thy praise. Anne Steele. [Morning.] Appeared in her Poems on Subjects chiefly Devotional, 1760, vol. i. p. 20, in 6 stanzas of 4 lines, headed, "A Morning Hymn"; and again in D. Sedgwick's reprint of her Hymns, 1863. In addition to its use in its original, and in an abbreviated form, it is also given in a few American collections, including the Presbyterian Psalms and Hymns for the Worship of God, Richmond, 1867, as, "God of my life, my morning song.”
