1 I will bless thee, said the Savior,
I will guide thee with Mine eye;
I will keep thine ev'ry footstep
Till I lift thee up on high.--
So His blessings have been with you
Now for many toilsome years,
And His mercy has upheld you
Spite of fightings, doubts, and fears.

2 Thou, my friend, shalt be a blessing,
So the great Redeemer said;
See thou that the little children,
These My precious lambs, be fed.
May this privilege of glory,
Which has crowned you hitherto,
Ever through long years of service
Keep you loyal, staunch, and true!

Professor Paul E. Kretzman led a group of Lutherans who left church fellowship with some Lutheran congregations in 1956 after he was charged with teaching error in class. This tune is adapted from Barthélemon's piece Durandarte and Belerma: A Pathetic Scotch Ballad (1797). Some editors describe AUTUMN as "adapted from Psalm xlii in the Genevan Psalter, 1551", referring to the similarity between this tune and FREU DICH SEHR.
