Representative Text

1 Have you been in the garden with Jesus,
Alone with the Savior in prayer?
Did the angels of heaven come near you,
Was Jesus awaiting you there?

Chorus:
Have you been in the garden with Jesus,
Have you walked with Him, talked with Him there?
Have you been in the garden with Jesus—
All alone with the Savior in prayer.

2 Have you been in the garden with Jesus,
And prayed till the break of the day,
And the glory of heaven’s bright morning,
Drove all of the darkness away? [Chorus]

3 Have you been in the garden with Jesus,
O say, have you tarried in prayer
Till the angels from heaven there met you,
With Jesus, the Savior, in prayer? [Chorus]

He graduated from Washington College and became a Methodist minister in Wilmington, Delaware area. He was pastor of McCabe Memorial, Richardson Park and other churches. In 1913 he was superintendent of the Anti-Saloon League of Delaware. He wrote about five hundred hymns. The writing was done as recreation and a diversion from his pastoral work. His goal in writing as well as in being a minister was to help people.
