Representative Text

1 Hark! I hear the tramp of legions,
Marching with resistless tread;
See! they come, a host advancing
With their banners high o’erhead;
“Whither march ye, youthful soldiers?
Under whose command, I pray?”
Hear the answer, “We’re the army
of King Jesus, on our way.”

Refrain:
We are marching on to Zion,
Christ Himself is at our heard;
Such a Chief we dare to follow,
Wheresoever we are led.

2 But what means this flaming banner,
With its strange device in gold?
Loyalty to what, I pray you,
Is this loyalty you hold?
“’Tis a pledge to Him who leads us,
That our swords shall never rest
Till the world shall bow before Him,
North and South and East and West.” [Refrain]

3 Onward! onward! Christian soldiers!
Find the battle’s fiercest fray;
Satan’s hosts shall flee before you,
All shall own Messiah’s sway;
Ignorance and superstition
Must forever pass away;
Onward! onward press the battle,
Onward, you shall win the day. [Refrain]
