Wagner, Johann Christian, born on June 23, 1747, at Possneck, near Saalfeld, Sachse-Meiningen; and died as Consistorialrath, Geheimrath, and first Vice-president of the Saxon administration at Hildburghausen, July 14, 1825 (Koch, vi. 260, &c). Many of his hymns are founded on, or are imitations of, earlier hymns. They appeared (91, including recasts), in the Neues Hildburg-haüsisches Gesang-Buch of 1807, edited by himself. Two have passed into Euglish, viz., "Ich bin erlost" (p. 153, i.), and "Vom Himmel kommt" (p. 1228, i.) [Rev.
