Bourne was born on June 11, 1819, in Germantown, Pennsylvania. He was a social reformer and author, lyricist, printer and editor of The Soldiers’ Friend, a newsletter for Civil War veterans. He served as chaplain of Central Park Hospital, a military hospital in New York City. He died on June 6, 1901 at Montclair, New Jersey.
