Come, Holy Ghost, in Love

Representative Text

1 Come, Holy Ghost, in love
Shed on us from above
Thine own bright ray.
Divinely good Thou art;
Thy sacred gifts impart
To gladden each sad heart.
O come today!

2 Come, tend'rest Friend and best,
Our most delightful Guest,
With soothing pow'r.
Rest which the weary know,
Shade mid the noontide glow,
Peace when deep griefs o'erflow,
Cheer us this hour.

3 Come, Light serene and still,
Our inmost bosoms fill,
Dwell in each breast.
We know no dawn but Thine;
Send forth Thy beams divine
On our dark souls to shine
And make us blest.

4 Exalt our low desires,
Extinguish passion's fires,
Heal ev'ry wound.
Our stubborn spirits bend,
Our icy coldness end,
Our devious steps attend
While heav'nward bound.

5 Come, all the faithful bless;
Let all who Christ confess
His praise employ.
Give virtue's rich reward,
Victorious death accord
And, with our glorious Lord,
Eternal joy.

Author: Robert II, King of France

Robert the Second, King of France, surnamed "Le Page" and "Le Devot," born circa 970, was the son of Hugh Capet, the first of the line of kings that succeeded the Carlovingian monarchs on the French throne. The story of his life, rather than of his reign, is a sad one; troubles both in his family and without so multiplying upon him that it needed all the consolation that he sought and found in religion to enable him to bear up against them. Having in 995 or 996 espoused Bertha, the widow of Eades, Count of Chartres, and daughter of Conrad the Pacific, his cousin in the fourth degree (a marriage at that time strictly forbidd… Go to person page >

Ray Palmer (b. Little Compton, RI, 1808; d. Newark, NJ, 1887) is often considered to be one of America's best nineteenth-century hymn writers. After completing grammar school he worked in a Boston dry goods store, but a religious awakening prodded him to study for the ministry. He attended Yale College (supporting himself by teaching) and was ordained in 1835. A pastor in Congregational churches in Bath, Maine (1835-1850), and Albany, New York (1850-1865), he also served as secretary of the American Congregational Union (1865-1878). Palmer was a popular preacher and author, writing original poetry as well as translating hymns. He published several volumes of poetry and hymns, including Sabbath Hymn Book (1858), Hymns and Sacred Pieces (1865… Go to person page >
