This jubilant setting of Psalm 47:1 is coupled with hosannas from Psalm 118:25. "Clap Your Hands" comes from the tradition of scripture-verse singing, a practice revived in the second half of the twentieth century, especially among American and British evangelical Christians. Jimmy Owens paraphrased the psalm texts and set them to music in 1972. It was published that year by Lexicon Music, Inc., as part of "Come Together," a liturgical teaching musical. Probably the most familiar use of "Hosanna!" ("Save us, we pray") is in the context of Jesus, triumphal entry into Jerusalem, in which the Jewish people quote Psalm 118:25-26, saying, "Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!" (John 12: 13). For further commentary on this psalm see PHH 47.
Liturgical Use:
