1 Chosen seed and Zion’s children,
Ransomed from eternal wrath,
Trav'ling to the heav'nly Canaan
On a rough and thorny path;
Church of God in Christ elected,
Thou to God art reconciled,
But on earth thou art a stranger,
Persecuted and reviled.
2 Still rejoice amid thy trials,
Nor regard thy lot amiss;
For the kind and loving Saviour
Is the source of all our bliss.
May He ever be thy portion,
He who gave thee life and breath:
In His keeping fear no evil
Now or in the hour of death.
3 Pleasantly thy lines have fallen
Underneath the tree of life;
For the Lord is thy salvation,
And thy shield in all thy strife:
Here the timid bird finds shelter,
Here the sparrow finds a nest,
Trembling fugitive a refuge,
And the weary pilgrim rest.
4 And upon this blest foundation,
Lord, our Lord, and Saviour King,
May Thy Spirit e’er unite us,
To it may we ever cling.
May we, members of one body,
Grow into a perfect whole;

Born: August 28, 1855, Geneva, Illinois.
Died: February 8, 1935, Rock Island, Illinois.
Son of Swedish immigrants, Foss attended the Red Wing College institute at Red Wing, Minnesota, then entered Augustana College at Rock Island, Illinois, in 1879. He graduated with his bachelor’s degree in June 1883. In 1884, he became professor of history and political science at Augustana College. In 1888 he became vice-president of the college, and served until 1900. On the death of Dr. T. N. Hasselquist he was acting president until the election of Dr. Olof Olsson as president in 1891. Upon Olsson’s death, Foss again served as acting president until Dr. Gustav Andreen became president.
