William Capers, born in South Carolina in 1790, was a Methodist bishop, editor, and missionary. He also worked as a circuit preacher and a planter. He became a professor of moral and intellectual philosophy at South Carolina College, and spent the latter part of his life as a prominent spokesman for white Southern Methodists. He was on the founding council of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South.
