Johann Friedrich Christian Stohlmann was born in Jossen, near Petershagen (Germany) on April 16, 1780. He was schoolmaster at Eldagsen from 1794-1796. Later, in 1807 he became teacher and organist at Klienbremmen. In 1808 he married Auguste Marie Gruntzner. He was also a painter. In 1834 he and his family immigrated to the United States, settling near Erie, PA. His son, Carl F. Stohlmann became pastor of St. Peters Evangelical church in Erie.
