1 Behold a form upon the lonely mount,
It is the Son of God so humbly bowed in prayer;
Lo, all night long beneath our load of sin his knees were bent,
All the watches of the night he wrestled there.
Refrain:
Then, my brethren, oh, let us live on the holy mount of prayer,
And our soul and body ever give to Father’s loving care.
We must watch and pray, my brethren,
Pray much, pray much and everywhere.
2 And all the twelve apostles live alone
To preach the saving Gospel, and to sing and pray;
And by their life of prayer and blest communion with the throne,
Lo, they walked with God and taught us all the way. [Refrain]
3 When hungry lions and the furnace flame
In ancient times were threatened Daniel’s faithful band,
They feared no harm, but kept their fond devotion just the same,
And by praying overcame the King’s command. [Refrain]
4 Thus all the sainted army overcame,
And won a crown of life by faith and humble prayer;
If we with Christ and all his host would overcome and reign,
Their example we must keep, their armor wear. [Refrain]
5 Prayer is our life, our souls’ triumphant wings,
The arm that holds the shield and hand that takes the crown;
Along the line on which a thousand faithful prayers ascend
Surely God will send ten thousand blessings down. [Refrain]
