"After the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, I joined the "Watchful Eyes" program of the Church Council of Greater Seattle, which posted Christian observers at two local places of worship — one mosque and one Sikh meeting-place — whose members feared potential acts of vengeful violence. I served there eight times, for a total of more than 25 hours, including one night when I was the only one there from midnight until 6 a.m. That isolated duty motivated me to sing, and during those hours this little song entered my mind."
