"Organ? You want me to play the organ? You mean I'll need to play the pedals for hymn singing?" Himself a pianist turned organist, the gifted Lani Smith offers this practical collection to aid those pianists who find themselves making this plaintive cry. Lani has selected widely used praise hymns and notated them based on a clever trick-set up a 16' combination on the Great manual and use it to play the bass line by itself while the right hand plays all the other notes on the Swell. Designed exclusively for congregational singing, most hymns are presented in three versions: the version just described; a second version that offers the possibility of a contrasting stanza to be played with both hands on the Swell; and a free harmonization to be reserved for the final stanza, thus adding a little "lift" to the singing. Employ this collection-and a little practice, of course--and you'll be able to proudly call yourself The Church Organist in no time!
