Based on Martin Luther's text and the tune NUN FREUT EUCH, the seven colorful variations of this partita are based on phrases from six stanzas of the chorale text. The variations also explore the tonal possibilities of the organ as well as varieties of touch/articulation.

The first variation is suited also as a hymn introduction to the singing of "Dear Christians, One and All, Rejoice" with the remaining variations suitable for use as organ stanzas in alternation with sung stanzas of the chorale. Entire partita is appropriate in worship or in recital.
