The cause is right

Author: C. D. Emerson Hymnal: Triumphant Songs No.3 #37 (1892) First Line: We are marching to the fray Refrain First Line: Marching on with a steady step and true Lyrics: 1 We are marching to the fray, Gladly singing on the way, For we’re bound to win the day For the cause of right. Tho’ the world may interfere With its scoff and taunting jeer, We will never, never fear, For the cause of right. Refrain: Marching on with a steady step and true, Marching on with the coming prize in view; We’ve enlisted for the fray, And we’ll surely win the day, Be the dangers what they may, For the cause of right. 2 We will never quit the fight, Tho’ the pathway may be rife, With the sorrows of this life, In the cause of right. Yes, the victory is sure, If we only will endure, Nor let Satan us allure From the cause of right. [Refrain] 3 Proudly then we march away, Wasting not the hours of day In the line of idle play, From the cause of right. Come and join our happy band, And for justice take a stand; Will you come and lend a hand In the cause of right. [Refrain] Topics: Children's Songs; Temperance; Work Tune Title: [We are marching to the fray]

Chas. H. Gabriel

1856 - 1932 Composer of "[We are marching to the fray]" in Triumphant Songs No.3 Pseudonyms: C. D. Emerson, Charlotte G. Homer, S. B. Jackson, A. W. Lawrence, Jennie Ree ============= For the first seventeen years of his life Charles Hutchinson Gabriel (b. Wilton, IA, 1856; d. Los Angeles, CA, 1932) lived on an Iowa farm, where friends and neighbors often gathered to sing. Gabriel accompanied them on the family reed organ he had taught himself to play. At the age of sixteen he began teaching singing in schools (following in his father's footsteps) and soon was acclaimed as a fine teacher and composer. He moved to California in 1887 and served as Sunday school music director at the Grace Methodist Church in San Francisco. After moving to Chicago in 1892, Gabriel edited numerous collections of anthems, cantatas, and a large number of songbooks for the Homer Rodeheaver, Hope, and E. O. Excell publishing companies. He composed hundreds of tunes and texts, at times using pseudonyms such as Charlotte G. Homer. The total number of his compositions is estimated at about seven thousand. Gabriel's gospel songs became widely circulated through the Billy Sunday-Homer Rodeheaver urban crusades. Bert Polman
