Jane Marshall

1924 - 2019 Meter: 9.6.9.6 Composer of "LAMENT" in Worship and Song Jane Marshall, was born Jane Anne Manton in Dallas in 1924. She became a pianist and organist and composed music as a teenager. She earned a music degree in 1945 from SMU. She married Elbert Marshall. She went on to write more than 200 hymns and other sacred music works. She later earned a Masters degree in 1968 from SMU in choral conducting and composition. She taught at SMU's Perkins School of Theology and tis Church Music Summer School from 1975-2010. She attended Northaven United Methodist Church in Dallas for many years, collaborated often with other hymn writers, and encouraged many students. James Mountain

1844 - 1933 Meter: 9.6.9.6 Composer of "[On Thee, O Jesus, strongly leaning] (Mountain)" Rv James Mountain United Kingdom 1844-1933. Born at Leeds, Yorkshire, England, he attended Gainford Academy, Rotherham College, Nottingham Institute, and Cheshunt College. He became pastor at Great Marlow, Buckinghamshire. Leaving the clerical field due to ill health, he conducted evangelistic campaigns in Britain (1874-82) and worldwide (1882-1889). An author, he wrote a number of books. He published a hymn book, “Hymns of consecration and faith”,and “Sacred songs for missions, prayer, and praise meetings” (1876). He died at Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England. John Perry

1845 - 1900 Person Name: John H. Lester Meter: 9.6.9.6 Composer of "LLANTHONY ABBEY" Lester, John Henry, M.A., of St. John's College, Cambridge; B.A. in honours, 1868 ; M.A., 1871. Ordained in 1868, he held several appointments, including the Rectory of South Hackney, 1885-90, and Diocesan Missioner in the diocese of Lichfield, 1880-85. In 1884 he became a Prebendary of Lichfield, and in 1890 Rector of Lexden, Essex. His The Lichfield Church Mission Hymn Book, 1883, was revised as The Lichfield Mission Hymn Book (n.d.). To the former he contributed:— 1. Hark, my soul, the sound of voices. Heaven Desired. 2. Hush, my soul, what voice is pleading? The Voice of Jesus. 3. O happy land of Paradise. Heaven. 4. O come ye redeemed. Praise of Jesus. 5. O solemn hour, so strange and still. Repentance. 6. Until He come! Ah, yes. Awaiting the End.
