1819 - 1881 Person Name: E. A. Washburn, D.D. Hymnal Number: 86 Author of "Christ Hath Arisen" in Royal Gems Washburn, Edward Abiel, D.D., was born April 16, 1819; graduated at Harvard, 1838; studied theology at Andover and New Haven, and entered the Congregational ministry. In 1844, having been ordained in the Protestant Episcopal Church, he became Rector of St. Paul's, Newburyport, Mass., where he remained till 1851. Spending 1851-52 in Europe, on his return he became Rector of St. John's, Hartford, 1853-62, and Professor of Church Polity in Berkeley Divinity School, Middletown, Connecticut; also Rector of St. Mark's, Philadelphia, 1862-65; and Calvary, New York, 1865-81. He died Feb. 2, 1881. His works include Social Law of God, 1874, and translations of Latin hymns. A selection from his poems was published in New York in 1881. Some of his translations are given in Schaff's Christ in Song, 1869, and other collections. [Rev. F. M. Bird, M.A.]

Born: February 14, 1808, Naples, Italy.
Died: 1884, Hove, East Sussex, England.
Buried: Kensal Green Cemetery, London, England.
Costa learned the rudiments of music from his maternal grandfather, Giacomo Tritto; he was placed at the Real Collegio di Musica in Naples, and after a public exam received a scholarship from Ferdinand I, King of the Two Sicilies. He composed his first cantata at age 15, and went on to write symphonies, oratorios, operas, and quartets. He eventually moved to London, where he was knighted in 1869. In 1871, he became "director of the music, composer, and conductor" at Her Majesty’s opera.

1844 - 1932 Hymnal Number: 166 Author of "When the Mists Have Rolled Away" in Royal Gems Annie Elvira Hubbart (Herbert) Barker USA 1844-1932. Born in Leon, NY, she received some education at Randolph Academy in her home county. She later taught there herself. Gospel songs were becoming popular in evangelistic services in the 19th century. She became a successful public recitalist, studying at the Buffalo School of Oratory and with Anna Randall Diehl of New York and Professor Leonard of Boston. After marrying in 1879, she moved to Montana with her husband, from that area. Along with other pioneers. She claimed those years as the best of her life. In 1888 they moved again to San Rafael, CA, he being an invalid at that time. She lived there the rest of her life.
